Is Mitsubishi turning the Evo into a R32/TT type car?
I went to our local mitsu dealer today to look at the new Lancer. While the interior is a little better, it still looks and feel cheap. The view from the drivers seat was not as open as the current lancer, it felt like I had tunnel vision (looking out toward the A-pillar area.). The trunk is useless by the way.

Man oh man how many of these threads are there going to be? We don't know numbers, feel of the car, how raw it is, or any of that stuff yet. As a future evo owner, the X is important to me in making my decision. I can pick up an 8 or 9 now, but I'm going to wait for the new X and ralliart because I DON'T KNOW. No one does. If you want a truly raw car, if that's all that matters, you can grab a set of coilovers and strip the "luxo-barge" interior and there you go, that'll be raw. the new car will most assuredly be quicker, have a more sophisticated suspension, and will outperform any previous evolution. that's what mitsu seems to be saying. although, it probably will be difficult to mod, and that may discourage people from the X, which is understandable.
there will be a 5spd option, so i don't see the need to wine about paddle shifters. they claim to be upping the power, and you can always loose weight, so i don't see that argument being so strong against the X. that is of course if you track your car often, which after reading this thread I would think most of you do.
now, it seems most of you are complaining that the evo is going to loose some kind of abstract characteristic regarding the car's identity. i'll give you that. it's like a band that starts off raw and avante garde and transforms into a different sound. The different sound might be better music, but it will be a bit different. what's more important? the image of the car or the performance?

I think the problem is that for $30k, people have certain expectations of what a car should include. Check out the first USDM STis, no radio or cruise control. It didn't take long to fix that. If Mitsu can give me the same performance and handling for the same or close to the same price with better ride and interior, what's not to like?
It will never probably be as rinky dinky as the 03-06 styles....
Only thing to do is add more power
VW here in the states is still considered to be on the low end. They still haven't gotten past the beetle/rabbit success of the 60's and 70's. I think that is why the whole VW/Audi thing here is kept quiet. Then of course there is the Porsche 914 sold here as a Porsche but elsewhere in the world it was a VW/Porsche.
well IMO mitsu is doing all of us a favor! look at it from a different perspective!!! ladies lov Lux-cars.. while we want a performer... mitsu actually mixed both in one package! this evo has the skin of a luxury but the heart of a performer! look, now u can smoke ricers while still apealing to ladies for its luxery... just think of the probability... yeah i bet most of the people who will buy an evo x will use is as a DD but i will actually try to expllit this pup and see how fast it can go, im not so sure about the DGS so imma stay true to the race and stick to a manual gear box, i hope i can hook a 6-speed mani gearbox! but watever i just see this car as a opportunity to still inflict fear in the hearts of ricers and STis and also inflict some effect in the hearts of the ladies... but watever this is just my opinion...
i just think that racing will just keep evolving, look at formula at its infancy... nuthing to wat it looks today with these state of the art materials and designs.. and same thing will happen to the evo.. just welcome the new design as u did when the evo 8 n 9 became part of the family, cuz even if u dont want to admit it, it is still an evo and the racing heratige will still go on!!!

Mitsubishi is just opening things up while keeping the one thing we love, performance. The biggest compromise that I can respect from anybody is the change over from stick to DSG since there are some implementations of it that's well... iffy & pales largely to the good ol'stick & clutch.
With that said, this car should be still good to go for performance so even the DSG should be responsive enough to have bragging rights (plus it'll be perhaps easier for manuel n00bs like me who don't want to burn up a clutch
). Overall if they can still keep this gem around 30-35k while improving the comfort aspects... I say go for it. Also, I think that some folks have a hard time trying to visualize the image of a track car being the Evo having heated seats, GPS, 18 air bags, back seat DVD screens, and in-dash computer that's already pre-installed with your choice of Windows XP or Vista
Well, the tech did say that the new EVO will be having more comfort this time, but that doesn't mean that it will be less raw. I wrote in another post that this new EVO is def something different then the others. If you watch any tech videos on the new EVO, has anyone noticed the amount of technology they have in it? The sportronic shifter is the beginning, the manipulation of the AWD at your fingertips to help control wheel balance, drifting etc. It's been tailor designed per driver.
Anyone care to counter this?

i think when we get a chance to crack open one of the new transmissions were going to find a CVT tranny inside. thats kindof like lexus new 8 speed. its really not an 8 speed it a CVT tranny with 8 stepped ratios to give the feel of a transmission shifting 8 gears.
if this is so. the gearing ratios will be limitless.. all hail the CVT GODS...
another item we can get into some extreme tuning to either acheive max accel or max fuel economy.

i dont think it such a bad thing if they make the NORMAL Evo softer. it will appeal to more people that way. this whould help make the modle more profitable and then Mitsubishi can spend that money delveoping more system to make the Evo even better!
look at what subaru has done. they are still turning out 2.0ltr CAGED cars to give the group N guys something to work with! i dont think Misubishi will ever loose thoes guys as it would lose the like of all you guys and girls.
look at ferrari has been able to do with the 599. it weighs more than the enzo, has less pwoer and still manages to keep up with it!!!
i dont like the fact that the Evo is getting heavier, but if it makes the bread better then im all for it!

mitsubishi is a business that wants a long term future. selling more EVO's as a halo car will assist in this goal.
for the purists it is not the hardcore car it once was. but as mentioned, alot of customers have given feedback about wanting more luxury items. its 2007, people expect more in their cars ie performance and comfort.

The mistake mitsu made was f'ing up the eclipse in the US market..... That car had everything and market respect too then boom they mess it up ...LOL
The EVO brand only appeals to hard core racer types while teh eclips had the casual buyer hooked too.. (having the lancer name dont help it either, since when people think lancer they think POS)
Mitsu should have made the new eclipse what the 350Z is now.
