EVO X Competitor: 2008 STI Pics Testing NEW
Oh...BTW, Subaru Canada: All-new 2008 Impreza hits new sales high, and SOA: 2008 Impreza Sets All-time Sept Sales Record
Subaru has always sold well in Canada, as it's one of the only options for import AWD reliability. They're sold in huge quantities out west here, specifically for being able to have a car with AWD, that can get around great in bad weather (ie. serious amounts of snow), mountain driving, etc. Should be interesting to see how the new STI does against the Evo though. And the RA vs. WRX.
You talk a lot...lol...I am not blinded by the hatred for the X...I just don't like the way the X looks...powerwise...it better have more HP stock vs stock...but then again its a new engine that nobody knows its ture capability of...it could be worse than the 4g63...the same...or even better...The fact is that the 4g63 has decades of research and too much aftermarket support to make huge gains with little mods as opposed to the new 4b11 which probably won't have much if anything from the aftermarket for at least 2 years...The fact is both cars looks wise are ugly...Performance wise it seems as though the new STi has more power over the previous STi 320 HP vs 293 HP...and it is lighter than the previous model...where as the eVo X has not improved much at all judging by the HP ratings of 295HP vs the iX 286HP...Under-rated or not...we honestly can't say that unless we have both Subie STi and eVo X on the same dyno...same day...same tuner...So with that in mind how are the people hating on the X? The STi makes more power and is lighter...power to weight ratio should tell you something...Honestly I could care less about going faster in twisties since 95% of the time I spend going in a straight line...the nearest track besides a 1/4 track is in another state...and I am not about to do some Tokyo Drift type of turns here in Chicago going 130MPH in a 30MPH on-ramp to test out and appreciate the new chasis of the X...sorry...Most of us that are not fans of the X is simply because of its looks...the STi doesn't look any better IMO but has more power and is lighter than the X...how can you fail to see this? Kinda seems as though the STi still is making cars for its enthusiasts...while the X took a step back in hunt for a new crowd...We are not blinded by the hatred...or are under the influence of street pharmacuticals...Just disappointed in the looks and not much improvement over the last eVo...to a point where its tough to say that a lot of us current owners will go trade their iX in for the X...that's all...
as for the sti, they havent released specs yet so no one knows whether it is lighter and more powerful.....i have read that it will have a carryover engine
It is absolutly the worst engine i have had to work on. Versus Chevy V8's, ford V6's and any inline 4. There ARE some nice qualities, it is light and tiny, and it is bias to the rear, too bad the car negates all that. I wouldnt say it is the smartest design for AWD, i think that is opinion based. It is also a horribly inefficient motor. The head flow is abysmal, there are a lot more points of failure and the header is like 4ft before it hits the turbo. But other then that i have no hard feelings.

1) Don't forget that Porsche runs the same engine design...for a reason...
2) One smart design idea is that the engine and entire drivetrain are symmetrical. Same exact weight left to right. You could cut the car in half and will have a mirror image on the opposite side. Which helps with balance. Try doing a skid pad exercise in an Evo and than an STI. The STI will pull the same exact numbers whether you go around the skid pad clockwise or counterclockwise because the engine and drivetrain are symmetrical. The Evo will pull more G's going clockwise vs. counterclockwise due to the fact that the engine is transversely mounted. Balance is shifted to one side of the car. Same thing happens on a slalom course.
3) Another smart design idea with the boxer engine is that it's flat and can be placed lower in the car...lowering the center of gravity in the car.
4) Another smart design idea is that the driveshaft comes directly straight out of the motor. With the Evo and just about any other engine design there have to be bends in the driveshaft. Any bend (even the slightest) robs the wheels of power delivery.
*EDIT* adding a 5th point...5) Because the pistons are horizontally opposed, the nearly cancel out vibration of the opposing piston...something a V engine or inline engine can't do because of their design. By cancelling out vibration, the engine is smoother and better at delivering power to the driveshaft.
Now, we all know the engine/drivetrain design aren't the only factors that affect the handling/driving experience that the STI and Evo deliver. Both are different driving experiences. Things like suspension dampening, tires, suspension geometry, etc. But, the shear engineering design of the boxer engine is indeed very smart.
And, I own an Evo IX...I'm not a Subaru fanboy. I can just appreciate a smart design. Hell, we could talk about the rotary motor and how smart that is too...

^common dude you can't call such an expesive vehicle a spectra.
It is matter of fact child of lexus SUV and Kia spectra and hence a hatch is born.
get this thing out of this country please send it to peru or something

I'd take an X over the new STi at this point. Ultimately I'm keeping my IX RS, but if I was in the market I would drive both, but the X seems like the better car to me.
