depends on what you mean by "a few thousand" a year. mitsu already plans to sell 4000 by fiscal year 2007. obviously it's not a volume seller like the accord/camry but my point is that the dealers will be pushed to sell more EVOs than before so this may lower prices in the long run as mitsu is ramping up evo production and marketing in a different direction to CREATE A NEW evo market. not the tuners of yore, but the "young nouveau riche who wants a well equipped sportscar" market. the acura tsx is a good example of such a car in that market. dealers will have incentive to sell more and more instead of raping the stupid few who are willing to over pay. dealers will only jack up the price when demand is greater than supply. when mitsu as a corp is spitting out evos like mad, there won't be such a shortage of evos to sell. this will undoubtedly lower prices or at least curtail dealer markup to a certain extent.

no matter what any fanboy says, the IX starts to depreciate as soon as you step out of the dealer with keys in hand. it's already a used car. when the X comes out, who'd want an "old" car??? sure the cognoscente may know of it's merit, but the general populace will see the car as an outgoing model. some people say they bought their IX below invoice and such. remember you're doing the dealer a FAVOR by getting rid of their "old" cars collecting dust. dealers know the X is coming and need to sell their IX's to make room.

the only way the IX's will retain their value is if for some crazy reason people start buying up the used models and then demand will be greater than supply and prices will go up or stay level.

yep. now isn't a good time to buy a used IX. but once the X comes out, the IX prices will fall. most likely people will sell their IX for a X or people who lease will get the newer X rather than buy out the IX.

I was at the dealership last week for maintenance parts. I talked to sales about when the new Evo will go on sale. Later, when he learns that I had an Evo IX in excellent condition, his attention immediately was to buy it back. He pull me into his office and told me he really needed it and would buy it back for $1800 less then what I paid out the door. Mine you, my car is stock and is drove normally, which my Mitsu Mech had told Sales. I have had strong urges since. However, the IX will be treated like the last Toy Supra, when lastly sold to which was widely sought after. My suggestion if you have a 06, 05’ keep it. An auto appraiser colleague suggested to me to keep it, and he say put it away, but I used to have five cars, and I won't do that anymore, and I will drive my IX.
