Will the new 6-speed help in the 1/4 mile?
Will the new 6-speed help in the 1/4 mile?
I am not to familiar with the working of transmissions very much but I was wondering if the new 6-speed and re-worked ratios in the MR will provide a significant difference from the GSRs in the 1/4 mile.

the only gain will prob be the car wil get off the line easier, however you will need to shift more... I believe the car will finish the 1/4 in 5th gear on the 6-speed
More shifts equate to more time burnt up having the engine between shifts, hurting the ET. Pro-Stock cars use a 5 speed lenco, but then again, its sequential and its a damn pro-stock car.

Ratios are almost the same for the 6- speed to the 5- speed for the first 4 gears.
only the 5th gear ratio has a dramatic change .86-1 for the 6-spd I believe compared to .72-1 for the 5spd.
1/4 times shouldn't change a lot, unless your trapping over 120mph

Ideally, you would have only 1 gear and you hit redline right as you go through the trap. That's how Top Fuel cars are. They only have one gear.
Failing that, you would have 2, 3, or 4. That's all that you really use. You have to pick the right gear so that you don't bog, but you also don't waste time shifting.

The only guys I can think of seeing a benefit right now from the 6 speed are the TurboTrix guys. They're topping out 4th right now on a motor that already revs WAY past the factory redline. The 5th gear in the 5-Speed box might be too drastic of an RPM drop right now whereas the 6-speed's 5th is much closer ratio-wise to 4th. Keeping the car in the fatter part of the powerband and resulting in better acceleration. Of course Mark might come in here and tell me I'm totally wrong as well.

just hope that the mr 6spd is not geared like the sti 6.
i hit 4th in the 1/8.
great for keeping it in the normal driving powerband, but too much shifting for drag racing.
sti gearing is as follows:
1st: is unbuttoning the jeans
2nd: undoing the zipper
3rd: droppin trow
4th: finally get some extended action
5th: i'm in it deep. how deep?..... ballz deep
6th: smoking the cigarette, nobody races in 6th gear.
gimme a bit more out of 1&2, and then keep 3&4 sweet like they are and i'd be happy.
hopefully your mr will come out like that. if so, there may be an 04sti with low miles @ a dealer near you

But I think from the numbers posted before, a stock Evo is still going to be in 4th no matter what when it goes through the 1/4, 5-speed or 6.

MR 4th gear ratio-------1.1:1........112mph at 7000rpm
Evo gsr--------------------1.03:1......114mph at 7000rpm
Both have a close final drive ratio
