The 2004 RS will be the lightest. No numbers are out yet, but I expect the 2005 RS to be around 3200 even, and the 2005 GSR to be just shy of 3300, with about 3350 for sunroof equipped models.
I have an 03 and I don't feel like I am missing out on much. I would like to see how stout this six speed is going to be. If it is the same one that the euro spec gets, I've heard it is weaker than our five speed is. I guess we will see. Gotta love the dark grey paint though, that is awesome.

We arnt getting some uber super ultimate race car that the previous models stand no chance against, and this article proves that. I think im gonna put this link in my sig lol. Great find sir!
I guess you will believe that 2 seconds a lap at willow springs over the 03/04 Evos isn't a big improvement as well? Both are rediculously fast but there is no doubt that the Evos and the STIs are getting better and they probably will continue to. Why not accept this? I shall do the same when the next Evo comes around.

I really haven't seen anyone say that it was going to be some kind of supercar so I don't know what truth needs to be spread. In the Edmunds article they do point out also that they weren't really skilled enough to take the evo to it's limits. I really would consider the Motor Trend report to be more accurate.
Either way, they're all Evo VIIIs so I agree it isn't going to behave like a completely different car. Personally, I would consider the 03/04s to probably be a better tuning base with less stuff to break but the 6spd, acd , Aluminum Roof, and the other standard features that pretty much make this car fully loaded are really hard to pass up.
And 2 seconds is a very very big advantage in one lap, 2 laps=4 seconds, 3=6, etc etc... Honestly I wasn't even expecting it to be that much better.

The two second gap amazed me too. In fact, if it had only been a few tenths better I would have been satisfied. People get so caught up with specs like pounds, and brand names of parts they forget that the people who design the cars can make more of a difference then anything.

"The 2.0-liter inline-4's extra power isn't the only thing that makes this car quicker. Mitsubishi engineers cut its curb weight by nearly 300 lb. This was done by swapping the steel roof for an aluminum one, and installing lightweight BBS 17-in. alloy wheels. The result: a 3085-lb., 5-passenger sedan that goes (and stops) like an Italian exotic."

Why would a magazine weigh the car themselves when they can just follow the manufacturer's specs?
The MR will NOT weigh less than an RS. If you think that, you're nuts. The wheels cut 10.8 pounds. The roof cuts 13.2 pounds. The side impact beams are an unknown. But, weight will be altered further because of the 6-speed, Bilstein suspension, and other bits.
I see a known loss of 24lbs, but some weight may very well be added back in. Considering the MR doesn't have sound deadening material cut, still has trunk lining, power windows, etc, it's NOT going to weigh less than the '04 RS. The '04 RS will probably be the lightest Evo the US will have available

UPDATE: Just checked. A gallon of unleaded gas weighs a little over 6.2lbs. With a 14.0 gallon tank, that means the gasoline difference is about 87lbs. You're still getting NOWHERE near the sub-3100lb weight you're expecting.
UPDATE: Official Mitsubishi Motors weight for the 2005 MR is 3285lbs.

One improvement you are going to notice is the ACD. Take everything you know about driving a VC AWD car and throw it out the window.
If the car begins to push, turn the wheel in more. What ever you do, don't lift during hard cornering! Drive like the throttle cable is frayed or left foot brake.
Here is some very good information on the ACD system:

the 6 speed and acd stuff adds up on the weight, but then there was weight reduction done elsewere... being a 2003 owner I feel like a recall is in order or atleast offer the 2005 upgrades! lol
The 2003 clutch should have never been used in the drivetrain/ weight transfered apps it was used in.. it was designed to be in the ACD drivetrain and a better balanced car.
Anyone have the weight dist. of the MR's? i'm guessing around the 50/50 or 55/45 mark?
