What happend?
What happend?
The more and more I go over the Motor Trend issue of the MR, the more upset and disappointed I get, what the heck happend? Ok reading the issue, I notice the USDM MR has pretty much the same power numbers as the regular USDM EVO (it was rumored to have 280 to 300HP), but what upsets me the most, is how the car some how gained 200Lbs? Where are the smoke tailights, the smoke headlights, where is the EVO MR from like 6 months ago? Honestly this is very disappointing, and the only thing that really makes the MR worth it's price tag is the 6-Speed Manual, but other than that I can not think of any reason why somebody would buy the MR over the RS, especially when the RS costs almost $8,000 less. I hope that the MR tested by Motor Trend isn't the for sure thing.
The car didn't gain 200 lbs. The idiots saying it was going to be 300 lbs lighter were the problem.
Also, comparing this car (or any car) to the RS is hardly fair. They serve 2 different functions. Namely, the RS is intended to be a track/AutoX/rally car. The GSR and MR are intended for more general duty.

With all of the 2005's getting the front LSD and adjustable diffs' (as if anyone here can really drive well enough to notice) the MR does not offer much in my opinion.
I would imagine the regular Evo's can be negotiated down close to invoice....while dealers will try to hold firm on the MSRP of the MR edition.... that makes the gap even bigger for basically a 6 speed, some slighly lighter wheels and the bilstein suspension pieces. MR = $34k (roughly) and a negotiated GSR (or regular) Evo should be $28k or so..... $6k of difference isn't worth it to me.
Car & Driver said their MR Edition weighed 3000lbs exactly which is 40lbs more than the stock 2003 that they tested.... i guess the 6 speed and LSD outweighs the savings of the lighter roof, wheels, suspension and glass.?
Too bad they don't make the 6 speed a $500 option on the regular & RS 2005's.

The USDM Evolution weighs SIGNIFICANTLY more than the JDM Evolutions to meet crash and safety standards. Even the 2004 RS weighs in at 3175lbs.
I've posted the official weights before, don't make me post them again.

He may be jealous, I don't know... But I can see why he feels this way. I think all the hype srrounding the MR was not created by the media or press, it was created by "us", the consumers that are enthusiats of this type of car. Think of it this way... It's like the new Epic Blockbuster movie of the summer coming out and you see commercials for it 6 months in advance and everybody is talking about it. Then when you finally get to see the movie and surprise it doesn't meet our inflated/ridiculous expectations. The movie was great, even spectacular, but for some reason we had painted a picture in our mind and the more we hype something the more impossible it becomes to be satisfied with the actual outcome.
To be dissapointed with this car is like saying your are dissapointed that someone gave you $50 grand instead of $60 grand for free!!!! Hey it's still $50 grand right! The MR is still an unbelieveable car and value, and like it or not is better than the RS or reg Evo VIII, even if not by much.
So now just because someone has an opinion of why he/she thinks the MR is not worth the money means that he/she is a hater????
I don't think BMW, Porshe, MBenz, etc are worth the money, but somehow I still want one. I must be a hater.

I ask this to those who call my man a hater: will you ever drive the car to such limits that the difference between the GSR and MR will be noticible? Of course some of us track their car regularly. I'm guessing that's the minority though. Most would not notice the difference, especially since the powertrain is the same except for the gears. Yes, the 6-speed keeps the car in the powerband better, etc., but lets be honest: myself included, most will not notice. I don't go to the track either (yet).
Now, keep in mind, I am buying an MR, so I'm not even talking trash about it, I'm just saying, I understand why someone would say the MR is not worth the extra price, assuming there is a big difference. Same person would say a 5 series is not worth it over a 3 series since they have the same engine (I think). And I would agree.

But i have to agree totally. The MR is a total disapointment. Most people get rims anyway so there goes those. Most people also get a suspension setup "JIC, TEIN, HKS" that will out perform the stock setup nomatter how you look at it. The six speed would be nice but i hear that the gear ratios are shorter which means more shifting and no going faster which sucks! The front LSD is very nice!!! and the ACD is also very nice! THose are the only 2 options i would even think about getting the car for. Problem is you can get a Quiafe LSD that has a warranty agianst racing and still be saving maybe 4K-5K off a MR. The ACD can be converted but more of a hassle then anything. So like i said i guess the only thing i would like the MR for is the ACD. Just my 0.02
Chris
yes, i feel much better now that I rained on the poor MR Edition's parade.
I feel better that I will keep my 2003 Evo and it will keep up with the MR.... I won't even have to spend a bunch of $ to upgrade.
I think the anticipation of the MR was that there would be a significant difference in it and the standard Evo.....and in my opinion the difference is not big enough... no big deal.
hell some people will ***** about climate control and stupid **** like that... I thought the MR was going to be totally awesome, but instead it is just barely better than my 18 month old car.
I have a full race car, so I am not too concerned about lap times of my Evo vs an MR.... I do auto-x the Evo once in a while, but i doubt the MR will be noticibly faster.
