Both work the same. S-AFC II has more features.

Is one of the two known for having more problems?

S-AFC II is available with in a black housing and a darker VFD, which matches the Evo's interior better. You can also passcode lock your settings so other's can't screw with it. You can also vary your RPM correction points, unlike the S-AFC I.

Both work very well on the Evo. I had the S-AFC I in my Eclipse GSX and it worked great. When I needed one for the Evo, the S-AFC II was new on the market and I bought it. They both work the same and they both work fine. It all comes down to what you want. If you are truely looking for ABSOLUTE "bang for the buck" then the S-AFC I is the one for you, since they are now a lot cheaper than the S-AFC II's.

The SAFC IIs are only $300 shipped now. The problem is finding a harness for a cheap price.

I have AFC II and love it. It is worth the extra money to have the knock display and the passlock codes because I know my buddies would screw it if I didn't have the lock code on it. Both work great though.

I have unopened AFCI from my Eclipse days.

Where do I get a harness for my EVO or do I need one?

buschur sells a harness. There are also a few guys on here that make them and will sell for cheap. The thing to do is to get one that is color coded. It save trying to figure out which wire is which. I got my color coded harness from a guy on here a while ago, I forgot his name. I got mine for real cheap

AFC-II.
The biggest difference between the I & II are the number of tuning points; 8 vs. 12. That and being able to adjust the points with in 200 RPM's of each other really makes tuning a breeze.
Installing an AFC I is just like a II, but without the purple knock wire;
