Quick but Importants Questions on UTEC Install

Hi,

So I got home for Christmas yesterday and thought I would install the UTEC today before I go to get it tuned on Wednesday (the car is going in for recall service and cam install Monday and Tuesday). I have two quick questions, but I wanted to be sure before I went forward:

First, I have the remote map selector switch, but there are a few wires I don't know what to do with. I plugged the main (white plastic) accessory plug into the UTEC, but there are two wires (red and back) coming out from the connector. I assume I don't use them (the UTEC was used and the wires came bundled together without leads/connectors)? There are also two long wires (also red and black) coming out of the actual switch itself. They each are connected to small metal connector-looking thingy's (I emphasize thingy's--sorry I don't know much about this sort of thing). Do I need to attach those to anything? I guess I'm hoping those are redundant/not needed in the evo UTEC.

Second question is: can I install the UTEC now, and then set the remote switch to the "0" position and be okay to drive up to New Jersey and get it tuned? I know that "0" is "stock mode" but they also mentioned in the manual that if the UTEC was set to "0" the ECU would not do knock control, which scared me a little. Anyway, I wanted to check and make sure before I started the car. Thanks for your help!

The two wires comming out of the molex connector (white connector plugging into the UTEC) are for a spare solinoid. These wires are used for a switch within the UTEC. The first application that comes to mind is for NOS use. You do not have to connect this up to anything for the UTEC to function properly.

The two wires off of the map switch are for connection to the clutch switch for launch control usage. For evolutions, this is not needed to use the launch control. You do not have to connect these wire for the UTEC to function properly either.

While running in Map 0, the ECU controls everything, including knock control. While in another map, the UTEC will control your knock based on your parameters.

You should be fine to just hook up the UTEC and drive around in Map 0, just as you would without the UTEC hooked up. I would recommend doing some datalogging to see how your car is running while in Map 0, as it will provide excellent feed back for map devolpments.

Great! Thanks for the help! I'm just about done installing it- I'm just having some trouble getting holes from the UTEC to line up with the holes from the car to screw it in . I will take it out for a spin when I get it installed to do some datalogging

I actually had the same problem. I just took my trusty dremel and enlarged the hole slightly on the dirvers side of the hole. I was then able to mount the UTEC without the "binding" issue I was having. You might also want to consider installing some foam on the bottom of the utec facing the passenger's seat. I found that mine was vibrating slightly against the lower front of the dash, just below the glovebox.

Yeah mine vibrates too, I took some weather stripping on the bottom of the UTEC where it hits..

Yeah it definitely seems to be a tight fit. I didn't actually get the passenger side screw on yet, so I think I will have to drill it out a bit. And when I was trying to splice into the ecu for my turbo timer and boost guage I accidentally cut the wire . I tried my best to wrap the wires together and taped it off with electrical tape, but the gauge and the turbo timer don't work! The car runs fine though, so I am looking forward to getting it tuned. I'll get AMS to take a look when I go to get the cams installed tomorrow. The tuning should be done by Wednesday, so I will post some dyno sheets of my progress. Thanks for the help!

Beside the holes not aligning I also had the vibration where UTEC was touching the plastic around lower side of glovebox and recently my ECU started vibrating inside that cheesy holder that can't tighten it enough.
I used some rubber leftovers from installing the boost gauge and computer antistatic packaging stuff to put around the ECU.
