Bringing Evo up to Colorado from Marland- Problems?

Hey,

I'll be making the 1700 mile drive from Maryland up to Colorado this summer. OriginallyI thought it would be necessary to retune the UTEC because of the drastic increase in altitude and change in fuel octane levels (93 in MD, 91 in CO). But I just called this shop and they said it would not be necessary, because the ECU could adapt itself. I'll buy that for the altitude, but for octane levels? Is that just because there is a small difference between 91 and 93? I am a little concerned because I am already getting some knock in Maryland (I think due to high boost levels ~23 psi), and I do not want the effects to be exagerated once I get it up here. Thanks for the help- sorry if this is a stupid question.

Jon

Just turn the boost down to 20 once you hit Iowa and you're forced to drink 91 octane

Ya unfortunately I didn't have time to tinker with the boost much before I left for school and had to leave the car behind. Hopefully I'll be able to resolve the knock issue once I get back to MD and before the long trip, so the retune wouldnt be necessary for that. Plus it only happens in like 3rd gear when I'm really getting on it hard if I remember correctly. But I digress.

So I've got two differing opinions on this one already lol. I'm on the fence- I would LOVE to save the cash and not have to get it retuned until I add the IC pipes and new intake. But if it's really necessary I don't have a problem with it. Thanks guys.

I'm in Cali and have 91 gas
per Turbox XS that's the reason I'm running Lean with the base map around 12.3 AFR
compare to the 11.1 people get with the 93 Octane

so basicly per Turboxs I'm running lean due to low octane
therefore please keep that in mind

if you set to Map 0 and let ECU control everything instead of UTEC
you will be fine

I was thinking I would do that too. Wouldn't that give me some pretty bad gas mileage though?

I just gave MAC a call (TOTALLY forgot about them ) and they said I do need to retune it. So I guess I'll plan on retuning it when I bring it up here.

Do you think I will have a hard time making the drive though? I guess I could try and stay out of boost, but that's hard to do on the highway. I could go to Map 0 but I felt like the gas mileage went down whnever I did that.
