Run UTEC with AC Power?

Hello,

I just purchased a UTEC and I"m trying to get it running. I thought I would try to connect it to my computer and 9-volt power before putting it in the car. But I can't get it to connect. Then it dawned on me...can I connect to the UTEC when it's not in the car? Does it have to be connected to the ECU for me to flash the bios and login to the hyper terminal?

I bought the UTEC used, so I wanted to flash it back to stock before putting it in the car. Any thoughts?

Dave2,

Thanks for your response. But I don't really understand what you are saying. Let me rephrase my questions: Can I connect to the UTEC via the Serial Cable using only 9-volt power even when the UTEC is not in the car (meaning it's not connected to the ECU)?

Thanks,

Luffy

Yes you can connect Utec with battery. You can go to turboXs.com to download the instruction. You can hook up with your labtop and delete the previous owner map. i remember i was confuse as you when i first got my utec

Doh!!!

Doh!!!!!!!!!!

I still can't get it to connect!!! It says "Unable to find device on any port". I tried hyper terminal and the flash program. My setup is: radio shack 9-volt power supply and serial cable hooked up to a win xp machine in my house. It's not hooked up to the car/ecu.

Any other ideas?

as long as the light on the UTEC is on, its getting enough power for its serial port.. The error sounds more like your computer than the UTEC. Just make sure the serial cable your using is a plain serial cable (the one that came with the UTEC) not a nullmodem cable. and if possible, try a different cable if your certain its not the PC serial port.

MalibuJack,

Thanks for the info. I've tried this on two different computers with the same results. I even went out and bought a new serial cable just to be sure (a regular serial cable). Still no luck.

The problem is, I don't know how to verify that the computer's serial port is actually working, because I don't have any other serial devices! I looked in device manager and it says it's active on COM 1, but that's about all.

Oh well, I think I'm going to try a serial to usb adapter and see what happens.

Thanks,

Luffy

yeah on your PC it'll be hard to tell for sure unless you have something else to connect to it that uses a serial port.

Another thought came to mind was how your serial port was configured, it might be sharing resources with something else in use at the time, or the speed the port is configured for is different than the speed to connect to the UTEC.. But all that is in the UTEC manual you can download from TurboXS if you don't have a printed copy for it.

Got it!!!

Yes, I got it! I called TurboXS and they talked me through it. They had me set the "bits per second" in the Device Manager so that it was 19200 also. That seemed to do it.

Thank you everyone for your help. Hopefully I can now get it in the car!

I'm such a newb!!!
