Question regarding S-AFC
Question regarding S-AFC
My evo is stock right now but at I have a brand new Apexi S-AFC (not II). I was wondering if it would be worth installing this considering my car is completely stock and this is an older version S-AFC...
should I wait until my car is modded to install the S-AFC or should I go ahead and get the S-AFC II

Well, tuning your car with a SAFC I, stock can give you pretty impressive gains, like 20-30 whp. The only thing is you need a pocket logger, wide band AFR, or tune it on a dyno w/wide band af. I think the major difference between the SAFC I and the SAFC II is that you can +/- in 200 rpm increments vs SAFC I 500 rpm. Warttalon uses an SAFC I and put down amazing numbers and times at the track.

Anyway, although the S-AFC can be used to make good gains, it still may not be something you want to install, because like SR20DE-T said, you will need some accessory parts in order to use it and tune it.
This includes:
1) Fields harness ($130) - so that your S-AFC becomes plug'n'play and so that you don't have to cut into the factory ECU wires. Not required, but highly recommended. This piece allows me to uninstall my S-AFC in less than 2 minutes for going to the dealership or in case I have to remove it for auto-x class purposes.
2) Logging device ($100-400) - I use the cheapest one there is, which is a pocketlogger, but that only logs narrowband O2 instead of wideband AFR. You would want a wideband device to properly tune, but my method does work...I just don't want you to venture down this path without understand that wideband is safer.
3) Knowledge. You will have to understand how the S-AFC works, how to tune AFRs, how to read your logger, how to understand the relationship between AFR and timing, etc etc. It has taken me a lot of time and practice to understand it all, and I still don't quite get it fully, but I'm able to make it work without blowing my engine...
