Engine Management Challenge
Engine Management Challenge
I would like to propose a challenge for a few different engine management companies for the Evo. With so much discussion and bickering happening in numerous threads, lets create the end all challenge.
Al's Dynoflash vs. Vishnu's XFlash
But it isn't quite that simple. What I would like to see is a controlled test environment, same mods, same conditions, same gas, etc (I will outline this later in my post). What this test would need, an independent Dynojet, no messing with dyno settings, both will spin the rollers the same. Next, by having these cars dyno back to back, we will eliminate the variable of temperature outside, altitude and many other things we have seen in question in tuning/dyno threads by these companies.
The car they will be tuning/dynoing is an Evolution IX GSR since this is the newest tuning platform and seems to be providing a challenge to crack all the ECU codes and MIVEC for both companies. In a perfect environment, the car would start out completely stock and be baseline dyno'd, then each company would do their baseline flash and re-dyno to see which flash is superior for a stock Evolution (this would all be on 92 octane).
But what I would like to see the most is an Evolution IX GSR that has a TBE & Intake be strapped to the rollers with a stock ECU on 92 octane with stock boost. Get those baseline numbers, let the first company do their ECU flash then put it back on the rollers at stock boost and on 92 octane, then the next companies follows by clearing the ECU and doing their flash for stock boost on 92 octane, then dynoing. Each level, baseline, Company 1's flash and Company 2's flash would get 3 dyno runs. Also a coin flip would determine which company goes first.
This would *I hope* eliminate much of the bull**** seen in the threads for flash-style engine management on Evos. So if we can get the companies to cooperate, a donor Evo IX from someone, and a non-biased dyno location we could really get this competition going.

I for one am very interested to see how this turns out, if both companies are willing to have a little good natured competition. I think that if nothing else, it will really help the competitors strive to deliver an even better product, which in the end, as the consumer, we all benefit from.
The real concern to me, and what I've spoken to barry about, is that the exact same modifications are used, and in the exact same conditions. Mostly this is for the integrity of the test, and to eliminate variables that can give innacurate or misleading results.
My company develops various software that scales from small organizations, up to the enterprise, and part of my job is to write the test plans to control all test cases, and test scenarios, so that testing is complete, and accurate. One of the worst things that one of my testers can do, is to file a bug without all of the details of their configuration. Without the exact configuration a bug may not reproduce the same way, or may not even show up at all. Reproduction steps are imperative in my line of work, and I definitely see there being a lot of translation into a competition of this type.
I wish good luck to Al & Shiv, if they are willing to compete with eachother. I'm excited to see what you guys can come up with.

I recall such a "challenge" a while back. I came out to NJ and we were going to conduct the comparison at Turbotrix. I recall Al backing out. I'm sure its in the archive somewhere.

I think that they all have pro's and con's to each flash and each one fits a certain % of the evo community. I have a dynoflash and have been very happy with it, but am going with xede, but it's not because dynoflash has a bad product, I am going to try something different.....
I would bet that if you assembled all the cars together in nj, one tuner will come out a little better than another, and then conduct the same test on a different car with different mods in dallas and a diff. tuner would be a little better.
bottom line, they all have great products and, I think, could tune the same car close enought that no one would be able to tell out in a "real world" situation, and your decision should be based on what you think will be best for your car....
all this thread/test would serve to do is stir the pot a little more and give some more ammo to disparage each others products even more than already happens...
as vtech8er states, get your car tuned by whom you trust and be happy with it and support others decisions to go a diff. route....
