Timing and UTEC, where to start.

Ok, I have been digging in the UTEC forum for a few days and online to see what timing is all about and how to run timing on an engine. What I gather is, that at low rpm, obvioulsy the crank is spinning slower, so less timing is needed so the mixture is ignited after the piston has hit TDC, but as the engine spins faster, you can run more timing because obviously the pistons are moving faster and takes a little longer to reach maximum cylinder pressure. What I dont understand is why does timing have to be so low at maximum torque?

I am going to be tuning my car myself this weekend after i install my cams. I have the UTEC and the innovative xd-1 WB o2. along with cams im putting in a fuel pump. I know what i need to do fuel wise but i'm having a hard time looking for what im supposed to do timing wise. Should i just bump up timing .2 degrees until i get knock? I dont want to harm the engine by doing this. I also downloaded uteclogger 2.5 (neat program) I have been running a basemap from turboxs, but I know I can run more timing. Thanks in advance!

My mods can be seen in my sig.

Not sure if you have the Utec Controll Center, but if you don't, GET IT

Okay, the base maps from TXS are sh|t,
try this.....https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=173889

You will get your starting point there. After that is said and done you can start increasing timing .2-.5* at a time but make sure you are adding fuel everytime you add more timing to keep the AFR's low! If your AFR's are fine, your boost is around 21, and your knocking you will have to back off timing a couple of degrees in the given load cells.

my rule of thumb was 20 degrees to start then ramp down to 6 degrees at peak torque then ramp back up to 20 degrees at 7500 rpm. Then go in and start playing with it......add a little up top, a little down below, and what ever i could get from the middle........

+1 to that, although I can't get my 3k not to knock no matter what i do and it occurs in pretty much all loads and throttle

Maybe you have to come down on your boost a little bit, what are your octane and boost levels?

Yea if I try running 22psi it knocks in a couple other places as well so maybe its just the gas I am using or the really cold weather

your plugs are fine, i was going to say ignition amplifiers can cause timing advance by default, i would have to look at one of your logs, can you post one up?

ok, i think i see your problem, it looks like you are runing too much timing just before the turbo spool up, can you post your current map for me?
