Big turbo + untuned engine, ok for track event?

Hi guys,

My stock turbo blew, got myself a 3037 turbo kit from hks with intercoolers and pippings. Meanwhile, I plan not to retune the stock ECU as I saving up for a stand alone. So guys, do you think its ok to go for some trashing with my current setup? I do have a bigger fuel pump and boost controller that limits my max boost at 1.25bar.

Cheers

Sorry for not posting the answer in my first post, NO. Although if you feel like it go ahead and try, I'd love to see the end result of anybody who answers yes.....

If we have to tell you NO! Then you should take the kit out and buy yourself an OEM turbo and call it a day.

Yeah, you should be fine, since a built motor will respond better to a big turbo kit and that's likely the end result of driving an untuned car on a track.

Problem is that, I’ve already bolted the turbo kit up and using my boost controller to prevent it from boosting over 1.25 bars.1 things I notice is that the boost only kicks in at about 3500rpm. So I think for daily drive, its ok as I usually shift around 3200rmp.

You have already been boosting in it, if so go ahead........... You should not of really even gone over 2-3 psi max, being that that turbo is going to flow a lot more air than the stocker....... If I was you save the money you were gunna spend on the track day and get it tuned....

With a MAS based system you should be okay with a change in turbo. I don't know why everyone thinks they need to tune for every mod. The system is mas based and it picks up on changes in airflow. The only consideration is knock and running lean. I would think the factory fuel system could easily handle that turbo at lower boost.

Boosting it on just a few occasion .Currently I’m trying to save up to get a stand alone with a tune. Meanwhile any suggestions to keep the engine save but still have fun with it?

Doesnt HKS recommend tuning with those kits right on their website? Do you have an AFR gauge in the car? If not...I would not even be boosting that thing until you get it tuned. Send the stock ecu out for a custom reflash at least, some one should be able to get you close without a dyno tune which is what you really need.

I do notice that under acceleration on slopes with mild gradient, the vehicle would produce some funny sound. Is that knock? The sound, sounds like loose parts vibrating

just save yourself the problems and get it tuned.
the power of a 3037 is not out of the reach of a stock ecu.
no need for a standalone.

Probably. Why would you risk blowing your engine by beating on it untuned if you currently can't afford to tune it? If you think the stand-alone is expensive, check out a complete rebuild. It is one thing to drive the car and avoid heavy load or high boost, but you are taking a huge risk by beating on it untuned.

Also, to the guy who said it should be ok becuase it is MAF based, I think you've got it backwards.

So you can afford the kit and Intercooler, But you cant afford a EMS or a tune? Should have went with something cheaper and better and got a EMS, But to each there own, its your car. But if you have to post about id you should tune your car after you get a turbo kit installed, maybe you should just take the kit off and learn a couple more things. Sorry if this is all harsh, but its the truth.
