When does race fuel go bad?

I'm just curious if anybody knows how long race fuel "lasts." For instance, if you have a 5 gallon container of race fuel, how soon should you use it? If you leave it sitting for a year, does it lose its octane rating? If so, how far down will it drop? Is it like pump gas or is it even worse? I've heard that the aromatics in it will evaporate, and this basically means that whatever's boosting the octane is no longer present.

If anyone has any personal experience or inteligent input on this subject, I'd like to hear it.

It all depends, if it is sealed in a vacumed container (no air in or out) and in the right temps it will last a very long time, pretty much as long as you would ever need. If it is in a crappy container being plastic and in the heat I would trust it after a very short amount of time. It is all in how its stored.

Cool, thanks for the replies. So the race fuel I'm speaking of has been in plastic 5 gallon jugs, but they haven't seen ANY sunlight, and have been in a rather cool area. Think it's okay after a year or deteriorated some? Not an easy question I know, but I'm just trying to get an idea here. Thanks again!

I would say some just becuase it has been in plastic, how much it has is the big question. It could be very little or more than you would like the only real way to know would be to have it tested or to test it in your car starting with a pump gas map then work your way up and see if everything performs in a stable nature.

Yeah, good idea... I may test it out this weekend and see how it does, I'll just take it easy and look for knock. Thanks for the input, hopefully it hasn't gone totally bad but I won't put on a race map and run the car real hard and find out the hard way

i was told by the guy at VP when i bought my fuel, that if you leave it in a dry place where temps dont exceed 100 degrees it will last upwards of a year if its in a steel, unopened, container...sooo

you could also mix half of it up with some fresh stuff in another jug and use it that way, should minimize the octane drop some if you don't wanna spring for all new

I run 110 leaded turbo blue. I store my race fuel in my garage in 5 gallon plastic jugs for months at a time. I've even used some after 5 months and it still performs just like it did fresh from the pump. I would say as long as it was sealed you should be fine for up to a year.
