I used a old belkin serial to usb cable and it worked fine.

 

I know for the newer macs you can run windows under bootcamp. It isnt a virtual environment... so you are running windows natively. Has worked for me. Older macs without the ability to run bootcamp are gonna run into problems. Virtual machines are and always have been a hinderance in terms of compatibility.
