Official EVO AccessPORT Information from Cobb Tuning

This thread has been created to educate our AP users about the various technical information we have created for the EVO AccessPORT.

Before installing the AccessPORT to your vehicle, please read the Service Bulletin for EVO 8 & 9 Potential Turbo Charger/Intake System Leaks v1.01.

To download the AccessPORT Manager software which allows your PC to communicate with the AP for firmware updates, transferring maps, etc.

If you are not hitting your boost targets we have an instructional document which you will need to read through, How To Install New Vacuum Lines On The Mitsubishi EVO 8 & 9 v1.01.

An educational document about How Mitsubishi's Factory Boost Control System Works v1.07.

IA Performance was kind enough to put together a Video of Cobb AccessPORT EVO8/9 Installation.

Take care,
Christian.

i guess we can start the Q&A in this thread now.

I installed the AP yesterday and have a couple questions.

1. After installing the AP and downloading the stage 1 93 oct my max boost is 1.2 bars then taper down to 1 bar. I did remove the secondary restrictor pill which was a PITA by the way. Would this mean a boost leak or possibly i will need the cobb boost line? I did not test for boost leak yet, I was going to when i install the TBE on wednesday and download the stage 2.

2. I have tried and tried and re-treid to access the live data but it keeps coming up with unable to communicate. I followed the proper troubleshooting as per your manuel by checking the wires are properly connected and then shut off car then start car but still it is not communicating. I've seen some other people having the same issue. Is this something to do with the ECU it self?

thanks
Jason

I can't speak on the Live Data part...but IMO I would definitely have them send out their boost line...for my car the primary pill needed to be "re-drilled" a different size for the boost to hit target....your car / elevation may be different and I think that may have something to do with it..but If it were me I'd just ask for the other boost hose line.

I hope things work out.

did you install the intake yet? I'd like to get your opinion on that once that is on.

I should get the intake, TBE and heat sheild on Tuesday. Installation will all be done on Wednesday in addition to the megan o2 housing. I tried contacted Cobb and IA but they are close on Saturdays. I hope IA or Cobb can send me the boost line so i can get this baby running right. As for the live data issue i have no idea why its not connecting, it doesnt even let me reset the ECU, it just comes up with no communications to ECU. I have rechecked the wires and everything. I hope I didnt get a dudd.

Still an awesome product though and im sure Cobb and IA will help me fix this.

TheEvolutioner,

I will do my best to answer your questions below.
1. I would suggest you test your vehicle to make sure that you do not have any boost leaks or other mechanical issues that can be contributing to this problem. Were you able to follow our Service Bulletin concerning the EVO's known leaks?
We currently offer three different vacuum line configurations. These vacuum lines are different due to the three different sizes of restrictor pills used to accommodate for the variances we have seen with the performance of this vehicle and to account for operation of this vehicle at different elevations. The process is simple, please speak with the retailer you purchased your AccessPORT from and we will be more than happy to provide them with the proper vacuum lines that should assist your EVO in hitting it's boost targets.
2. Does your AP power up when you connect the cable/OBDII connector to the vehicle? We need to verify the device is working properly. You are welcome to e-mail me (christian@cobbtuning.com) so we can more quickly communicate about this matter. If your AccessPORT has an issue we will take care of it, please allow us the time to get to the bottom of this.

Take care,
Christian.

Christian - I purchased the AP from IA performance, I will contact them tomorrow morning so we can figure out which cobb boost line I need. Also the AP does power up when connected to the OBDII port. I have not performed the boost leak test yet, I'm gona make a run to home depot and pick up the stuff so i can do it today. I will let you know how it goes. Also, I've read from the cobb forum to uninstall then reinstall the AP. Would that work or cause more problems?

thanks
jason

Ok so I went to home depot and spent $5 for the 4 pieces that you recommend on the service bulletin. It worked out great. I disconnected the J-pipe and installed the tester and built the pressure to 1.4 bars. It held fine. I checked around for hissing didnt here anything. Only hissing i heard was from the hot side intercooler. I sprayed those couplers with soapy water and tighten the clamps, they werent leaking. I guess its the air going in the intercooler was making that sound. Everywhere else was no leaks.

So then I uninstalled the AP then disconnected the negative of the battery for 15 minutes to reset the ECU. I then reinstalled the AP with the stage 1 93 octane. Downloaded just fine but it is still not connecting to Live Data nor Performance. I dont know whats going on. So I was checking the pins to the OBDII connector on the car then I was comparing it to the pins on the COBB connector and i notice a few pins are not aligning to each other. There are like 3 pins that are not touching anything Is it possible that I got the wrong COBB connector?????

Just thought I'd chime in for moral support.

in reading your last post I would assume if the AP is/was able to actually download your stock settings then upload the stage 1 93oct map that it has to be communicating....I would think if the connector was bad, or like you said may seem that pins aren't lined up that it just wouldn't communicate at all...I think the Live Data stream may have the hiccup.

Just my thoughts...which I know don't help one lick.

I'm sure that immediately they will get the bottom of it and get you up and running.

Good luck.....by the way PROPS on following the boost leak test on your own....I am way less able and have to rely on others to do that for me

I've been in contact with Hunter from the Cobb Forum and he's been helping me out alot. From what he says on a couple of the first Evo OBDII connectors there was a timing issue that wouldn't allow the AP to view live data but would not compromise the ability of the AP to flash the vehicle. So once i get home today ill be calling Cobb and hopefully fix the issue.

Out of maybe 25-30 times I have gone to access the Live Data there have been 3 times that after it was "trying to communicate" it came back saying "unable" to do so....just like you say happens every time....but then the next time I try to access that feature it will always "get thru" and show the live data.

that has been my experience so far

Have you figured out why you were only boosting to 1.2? I have the same problem, and I too did not find a boost leak

Forgive me because I don't even know how much 1bar or 1.2 bar is...in terms of Psi...but the stage 2 91oct map is only supposed to hit like 21.5psi and taper down from there to I think 19psi.....

I would assume once again if the target levels are not achieved you need to call either COBB or IA Performance or whoever sold the AP and tell them you need to get the COBB boost hose line (tailored to your elevation/state) mailed out.

It sounds like most times only removing the 2ndary restrictor pill is not enough....I did that plus (since I installed very early before COBB was giving out new lines) had to drill a new primary pill hole size to achieve targets.

Hope that helps some

1 bar = about 15 psi so if your only hitting 1.2 bars like me it's only hitting about 17 psi. I have spoken to Parker from Cobb and he said the Cobb connector might be bad so i returned the whole AP back to Cobb yeterday. I have to say their Customer service is AWESOME and very very perfessional guys. They said they will ship the Cobb Boost line aswell since I am not hitting the mark.

I should be receiving the TBE/intake/heat sheild today but ima have to put a hold on the installation until i get the AP back from cobb.

Well it's always a downer when things aren't perfect but to COBB for fast acting customer service.

This is one of the main reasons I decided to spend the extra money to use the AP to tune the evo vs. open source because I knew COBB would be there if things didn't / don't go as planned.

Just received the TBE, intake and heat shield. One word... AWESOME!!!! Cant wait to slap this ish on.

I notice some thick spacers came with the TBE. I'm wondering what they are for. Are those the same spacers that didnt come with yours CPA5?
