Is it me or is the Cobb TBE getting louder and louder?? I have the test pipe on and I'm going to have to buy the Cobb high flow cat to quiet it down. I've been pulled over numerous times for the exhaust, had to go to court once but it was dismissed. I'm guessing the materiel in the muffler aint doing its job like before, I've had it over a year now.

Anyone running the Cobb high flow cat???

 

I have their exhaust with the high flow cat. I also had a Cobb TBE with cat on my Subaru, the Mitsubishi is quieter driving down the road. At WOT it is hard to tell which is quieter. Tthe Mitsubishi gets a good bit louder between cruising and WOT where as the Subaru got louder but not as much as a difference between the two. The exhaust will get a little louder over time from breakdown of the packing in the muffler. I think some of it is also in our heads, being excited about the new exhaust and its sound over time can fade away and it seems to get louder.

 

That has not happened with mine....of course I've only driven my car about 4500 miles since last oct. when I had it installed

 

i have the cobb downpipe, high flow cat (which is got for like $130 new from lancershop because they made a pricing error hehe) and greddy ti. car aint too too loud, compared to my buddie's evo with turboxs and the dc sports downpipe and cat-delete, my car is noticable quieter at idle and alot quicker at WOT. hope that helps

 

I think you example wouldn't quite match up since The Evolutioner has a full COBB TBE....your Greddy Ti would not sound the same as the COBB Cat-Back section.

So Jason...what's the word on this....do you really think it is getting louder?

 

I've had the tbe with hi-flow for a few months now. Pretty much had to do some tweaking of the muffler brackets and downpipe. Cobb has been very supportive in helping me. The downpipe was vibrating against the frame above the cross braces so I flattened it only about 1/8" with a piece of 2X4 and hammer. It doesnt hit at all now. Made a little trench in the dirt lined with rags so I didn't scratch the pipe.

The extension pipe was hitting a bolt on the rear close to the differential. Bending the muffler brackets fixed this and also centered the tailpipe in the bumper cutout.

Right now there is an incomplete weld around the front flange (extension pipe) that mounts to the cat. The pinhole makes a 'pfft pfft' noise. That was before the weld around the rear of the resonator can failed. It's a big, bad crack. Crack is bad! And no, I havent bottomed anything out. It just cracked. Not enough weld (but they are pretty!).

Cobb is replacing the extension pipe and muffler. The muffler was gouged and the stamped Cobb logo on the tailpipe wasn't centered 12 o'clock when looking down from the top.

I understand that Cobb actually outsources the fabrication of these components. There are definitely issues here but they are replacing the bad components and footing the shipping, so I chalk this up to experience.

Lastly I purchased this exhaust from the reccomended dealer in S. Fl., Velocity Factor. I initially told them of the problems I was having and instead of accepting that there could possibly be a quality issue, it was suggested that I use wire ties and brake cleaner to force the system to stay in a particular place on the muffler brackets. I didn't think that was cool. The rep got quite heated with me and wouldn't accept that my experience could see a mfg. defect. Felipe was his name. Beware Velocity Factor, not a cool seller.

 

I have an incomplete weld on my downpipe, and my downpipe has cracked at the hangar..Logo on the tip is also off center..
Check to make sure you are not getting a leak from a broken hangar or blown gasket.

 

I made a thread on worst exhaust ever...mine is starting to sound like it has a weld crack leak in the mid resonator or muffler inlet....maybe its a muffler hanger weld crack. Logo is also off enter.

 

Got my replacement cat back. Had initially bought the whole tbe and hiflow.

This one is shorter by over an inch, the muffler hangers are dragged out of line with center front to rear and the resonator has a nice dent in it because the packing crew put the muffler right on top of it and the muffler has a dent in it too.

Welds look weak in the same places. The downpipe was pulled down into the rear cross bar so I had to loosen up everything and shove (ie: misalign) flanges so there was no vibration.

Mufler logo is centered now but the tailpipe is about a pencil thickness from the left of the bumper opening.

Calling back tomorrow. COME ON COBB.....jeez!!

Do Subbie people have these issues?

 

I was planning on purchasing a COBB TBE. However, reading the posts about the AP issues and now the TBE and lack or untimely response from COBB, I am not sure...

 

I don't know what the percentages are...but it seems like most people who have issues with vendors post up on the forums about a fix/solution to their problems and then complain it doesn't get resolved in a timely fashion.

Why wouldn't someone just CALL the vendor 1st and deal with it that way instead of assuming the vendors are all checking these forums every hour....makes no sense to me.

In regards to your concern...I've called COBB on issues and have had resolution within minutes.

Also, I have both the AP and the Cobb tbe and have had no issues whatsoever....of course they're have been others who haven't been so lucky...but every vendor on these boards aren't perfect every single time either.

 

Not everyone is available to call and troubleshoot problems with equipment that was to already supposed to be thoroughly R&D'd and that they spent good money on.

I know personally, I have little time during business hours to do these sorts of things and not everyone is on Mountain Standard Time.

Some vendors have made it a point to realize this fact and some I don't think have.

Lessons learned, however. Chaulk one up to experience.

 

I didn't write here to badmouth Cobb, just to state the facts. Before my IX I had an RSX-S and installed a Borla catback on it. I literally bolted it on and drove away. I would have gotten one for my EVO too but Borla doesnt make one to fit it (found out after calling them).

For over $1000 I really expected to get something absolutely fantastic. Not quite so. True, Cobb's support is pretty good. What steams me I guess is that fabrication of the system isn't really "up there" with what I expected.

I did email pics for both problems and one response was disbelief by their fabricator. I can tell you that the welded seams are a bit stingy in fill rod, though they are pretty. Stingy equals weak and prone to failure. I haven't seen an exhaust on a JDM bumper equipped EVO yet but one email reply was that I may have received a muffler for a JDM bumper.

The muffler tip on my replacement is shorter than the first Cobb (1 1/2"). And of course there's the question of why the center rubber mount on the muffler hanger is shoved towards the front of the car by over an inch.

This is supposed to be a jig-welded assembly. I'm not sure if the jig may be a bunch of nails driven in a piece of plywood or what. All I know is that I hope Cobb fixes these issues and tighten's up their act...a lot! I used a big amount of work time trying to get this resolved just to have to do it all over again.

 

Mine fit like ***, nothing aligned properly...got excuses, fixed it myself. Never again will I buy from them.

These products should bolt right up, one exhaust with problems is one too many. It's inexcusable for a vendor/manufacturer to be putting a customer through doing their rework.

I'm on the fence about buying a COBB catback for my JDM rear and after hearing these issues I'm glad I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

supwiddiss, they should send you out a brand spankin new exhaust overnight and pay a shop to install it for you for all the trouble you had from some damn 3" pipes. then, you could sell that JDM muffler section to me, lol.
