Welding the block?!
Welding the block?!
Had an accident a few months ago. i have been parting out the car with hopes of keeping the block and dropping in my new one. Unfortunately when i impacted, the front motor mount was pushed in an upward motion and basically tore my block. there is a tear about 2 inches long now. Has anyone ever tried to fix something like this? is it possible!?
I know it is possible to weld cast iron with high nickel content welding rod. Simple cracks can be filled, but I don't know about "tears." Can you post a pic?
It will require prep work too; cleaning, drilling the ends of the crack to keep it from speading, heating the part, and then the welding.
It might be easier to source a good used block.

had an issue similar to tha with a cracked block (was advised that crack could have been due to sitting for prolonged periods in extreme cold without coolant...). in any event, was advised by quite a few "specialists" against any sort of welding...
talked to a few guys today.... they told me the same thing.. :-( major suckage... any idea what it would cost for something like that to replace? without buying the whole flippin engine
