Tips on smoothing my timing map

this is the tune that has been on my car since i bought it (done by a moderator on here with no wideband). i added a perrin intake in place of the stock intake tube with amsoil cone filter, did a few pulls and got some knock (see log clips below)

rpm//2byte rpm//omnimap//load//knock//timing

tps//rpm//2byte rpm//omnimap//load//knock//timing

i clipped the wideband reading out since it was useless. still ironing out the previous owners eff ups and need to redo all the lc1 grounds and re calibrate the sensor to get some sensible readings...didnt make sense at all to be knocking at 2 degrees timing with a 10.2 afr

So overall if you look at my timing map you can see that starting at the 120 load column there are tons of cells that have timing numbers jumping all over right next too each other both vertically and horizontally. some colunms too me almost need to be totally reworked to smooth out the transitions. i dont THINK im seeing any effects of this timing, except one log where i barely touched 260 load which had 2 cells next too each other and about 4 or so degrees apart interpolating.

anyway. im pretty green on tuning, not the concepts, just the actual application, so any input would be awesome...ill see if i can come up with a version of my own in the next day or too and post it up.

that is because the numbers keep jumping up and down in the map you posted...

are you saying the knock is?

using maptracer showed it may be hitting cleaner areas of the map.

but anyway. my problem lies in say the 160 load colunm which reads down :
2 6 7 6 5 7 9

im not sure what the best smoothed line would be, since the map is so choppy and i believe it should be incremental and smooth both horizontally and vertically

like i said this was the map on my car, so i dont know what the though tprocess was nor have a very clean slate to hone my tuning skills unfortunately.

its feeling like sudoku...which i suck at lol

Check this thread out.

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ec...ming-maps.html

It gives lots of examples of what a good smooth timing map should look like.

I'm still very much a noob also so you can take what i say with a grain of salt and maybe some of the gurus will chime in. In general you want to be hitting 4-5* of timing at peak load and then steadily moving up from there until you get to redline. Every car will vary but mine for instance hits about 4-6* around 3500 and then ramps up to 10-12 by 7000. Timing logs will vary a little depending on intake air temps. The key is having smooth transitions as you know. Try using the interpolate functions to smooth things out a little and then do some pulls to see what the car likes. If you keep getting knock in a certain area then then pull a degree of timing until the knock goes away.

I can't believe people get paid to tune like that! I barely know what I'm doing and even I would never tune like that. I feel for you though man. I ended up with a garbage tune like that not long after I got my car.

Luckily I don't think this was a pay tune. All the gauge wiring that was done with 10 different gauge wires and crimp connectors as well as incorrectly wiring the lc1 was a pay job tho. Lost about 4 hours of my life to that fix lol.

Thanks for that link.

so here is my first pass at the map.

i used a stock version of my ROM as a guide and found that there were random cells in the 60-90 load range that had 2 and sometimes even 3 degrees of timing pulled down low, which makes me feel like thats why my car had weird around town characteristics.

by fixing those cells (they are all still highlighted) i was able to make no more than 1 increment changes in the boost area of the map to be able to clear out all the jumping around. some areas are were and still are less timing than a stock map

now i need to figure out why im half dumb and cant copy/paste this over to the other two high octane maps, and then grow the ***** to load the map haha.

looks decent man. Don't be afraid to give it a shot. As long as you haven't messed with the knock sensor settings you'll be fine. The knock sensor pretty sensitive it will quickly start pulling timing if you get any knock.

another pass, i think i got it to a place i like it for the moment. im just confused since comparing it to a stock IX rom, it has a max of like 3 degrees advance along the map...seems barely tuned to me, although i guess i need to see the real afr's first.

in the end, i think the knock i was getting was a combo of cells being all over the place, as well as too LOW timing in areas, as it seemed to be struggling for 2-3 degree at peak torque. now i should have 4-5 i hope.

my only other issue at the moment is that i dont seem to be able to get the other view for the map, i have a recent version as well as being in developer mode...odd i guess.
