UTEC Launch control

Ok guys, I know there is a little confusion out there as to what you need to do to actually use launch control on the EVO. I want this post to serve as a little walk though.

Step one: connect to your UTEC.
Step two: Hit E to go to the Edit maps screen.
Step three: Use the S or Tab key to go to the parameters group
Step four: enter the Users constants parameters
Step five: Tab down to the launch control settings and set your desired RPM and your desired launch control rev-limit control method. Note we at TurboXS highly recommend the use of fuel cut (INJ = 1) for use with launch control.

Step six: Hit “ctrl-x”
Step Seven: Hit “ctrl-s”
Step eight: Hit “enter”

That’s all there is to setting up launch control/flat-shift on the EVO8. There is no additional wiring or hardware needed.

So who has tried it?

Nathan,
I thought you said that you needed the clutch switch connected. I haven't used it on mine, but I didn't wire up the clutch either. I guess I can enable it and see if it works. I was under the impression that without the clutch switch enabled, you would not be able to rev over whatever the set RPM was.

Nevermind. I just saw this:
You don't need the clutch switch to use launch control on the EVO. The UTEC makes use of the stock clutch switch and doesn't require any additional wiring. Just turn the launch control on in software. I highly recommend you read the notes on launch control in the back of the UTEC manual though.

I believe thats how it was on the WRX, however the EVO has the clutch switch grounding through the ECU so it is a controllable ground.

The stock clutch switch is monitored by the UTEC so you don't have to do anything beyond enabling it in the software.

If there is something mentioning the clutch switch needing to be hooked up in the manual, then I need to update that as it's a carry over from the WRX manual. I am fairly certain that I caught all references to it in the current EVO manual though.

Here is what I read in the manual.

Page 23.

NOTE: If you enable the launch control feature but don’t have a clutch switch installed then maps 0-7 will always have the launch control rev-limit engaged (i.e. if your launch control rev limit is set at 5500rpm you will not be able to rev past 5500rpm). Switch positions 8 and 9 will always override the clutch switch so will not run launch control.

Thank you! It is nice to get a second set of eyes on things.

Go figure... it’s in bold and I missed it.

Yeah I notied the same thing, which was what confused me.. But it works SWEET and requires nothing but enabling it and setting the RPM value if needed...

I set turned mine on last night and the stutterbox worked, but it wouldn't rev over the 5500RPM limit. I had other issues, so I didn't troubleshoot it much, but I thought it was strange. It was obviously using the stock clutch to initiate the stutter box, but once I was moving it was still there.

I'll try it again tonight to see if I missed something.

Let me know what you find out. Also check the software version (upper right hand corner of the UTEC home menu) that is loaded on your UTEC.

I was V1.1 I think. I just upgraded to 1.3 this morning. I'll see if that was the issue.

I've enjoyed using the Launch Control myself. I havent been able to get better track times using it yet but that has more to do with how fast the flat foot shifting kicks in. If you run a log that includes the clutch position youll notice that the clutch goes from 0 to 1 just by barely touching the clutch. This causes some early engageing of the flat foot shifting sometimes which causes you to lose some speed and time. Does anyone know if this switch is adjustable at all? I havent spent much time looking for it yet myself. Also, it would be nice if there was a settable delay for flat foot shifting to prevent this as well.

I have a noob question... what exactly does launch control do? Is it similar to anti-lag systems or does work in a different manner and do different things? Thanks...
