Engine temp issue
Engine temp issue
Possible coolant temp issue. My car has been sitting for a while. I went to start it just to let it idle and it wouldn't start right away. After a few tries it would start and run for about1 second and shut off. I couldn't keep it running unless i press the trottle in and out. I did a quick scan and it looks like the engine temp is -74. The temp doesn't move. The dash gauge works as it should. I searched around and didn't find much on these going bad. Has anyone else seen this before?
Sounds like the coolant temp sensor or wiring is bad. I would be looking hard at the wiring given the car has been sitting and we all know how mice can be.
The dash uses a different sensor than the ECU so it makes sense the ECU is seeing one thing and the dash another.

A bad coolant temp sensor would certainly explain the poor starting. I don't think its very common for them to fail, but it does happen. There are 2 sensors on the thermostat housing. One for the gauge and one for the ECU. You might want to make sure they are both plugged in and there isn't a ton of corrosion or damage to the wiring harness or connectors.
Other than that, replace the sensor and go from there.
