Thread -O- Maps (post 'em here)

Ok guys.. Going to start posting my map recommendations and mods as I come up with them..

First one which I'll try to attach tonight, is a revision to the New-STG1 map posted on TXS's site.. I'm hoping if they like this map, they can post it along side theirs.

What does it do? Well, here's a list..

1) Revised the Timing map slightly so it doesn't get a transition stumble AT ALL, you can now set your TPS Transition point back to 25% and it works PERFECTLY. Can I tell you, the Timing map is CONSERVATIVE, more conservative than my car's stock timing map.

2) Revised the Boost map so it doesn't feel weak at part throttle compared to stock.

3) Revised the Fuel curve slightly to accomodate the Buschur (and other similar) Air filter (MAF error) and the inherant 1psi increased boost with the Buschur 3" turbo back WITH catalytic converter.

Still running open loop boost control so my maps will work with all "Out of box installed" UTEC's

Road tuning is tedious.. so I may spend some more time working on the part throttle and low RPM (High MLP) settings to attempt to find the difficult to compensate for areas with an aftermarket intake/filter.

Anyone who's worked with an aftermarket filter probably has discovered the turbulence issue with many of the filters, where the MAF reading will jump up slightly, then fall back a few hundred RPM, then jump up again.. under acceleration, if your at a transition point for an MLP level you may find the car feels like its stumbling..

I'm trying to figure out the best way to even out the air flow since it may not be possible with the UTEC, possibly an extended "EggCrate" to put in front of the MAF eggcrate so air is directed straight through the sensor.

Excellent. I used your recs for addressing my "transition studder" earlier, and was very pleased, although there is still a noticeable "miss or stumble" when accelerating hard. My utec came with the TPS set at 35%...I'm not sure why. I've purposefully avoided changing my intake system to avoid the problem with the MAF sensor discussed earlier. I'm glad to see that someone is addressing these issues. For some reason, Turbo XS has not. Question...would your map be safe to run with only mods being a complete exhaust system and BOV?

Question

Dumb question...what is "MLP" ?

Also, what is the "stock" TPS threshold setting that comes with the utec? Mine came set at 35%. The owners manual (page 42) says 60%, "the approx. point at which the EVOLUTION ECU switches from Closed Loop fuel control to Open Loop fuel control." I thought the stock system was Open Loop?

Sorry if these questions have been posted elsewhere. I couldn't find them on search.

Best I can figure is its "MAF Load Percentage" or "MAF Load Point"

The stock ECU runs in Closed loop during part throttle driving, around 30% TPS.. Once you go passed that point, it uses open loop fuel and timing maps built into the stock ECU.. if you try to "adjust" the closed loop operation, the short term / Long Term Fuel trims 'adjusts itself out' In Closed loop operation, it tries to maintain the "Stoich" Air fuel ratio, which is good for cruising around and gas mileage..

I want to try to avoid getting too offtopic on this thread.. but My current maps should be conservative enough to run on fairly stock vehicles, again, a little fine tuning is always needed because my car inherantly runs a bit different than others I've worked on, but that really only means that my maps (the fuel portion) generally won't lean out the car as much as other maps.

I have always had a "Knack" for finding a sweet spots in tuning, so I always start my tuning sessions with some gut settings based on a quick drive (2 or 3 pulls at 3rd and 4th gear.. you will get two DIFFERENT AFR's in both of these gears.. the trick is to find a happy medium that makes them both happy) Once I rough in my fuel settings, I go through and look at what the car wants for stock timing.. I replicate that, and then bump the timing a little to find a little power, My car seems to already have a pretty aggressive timing curve, so I haven't had to do much with it.
Oh well, before I ramble too much, I should point out that the timing map I was working with today, which was the New-Stg1 timing map, was way too conservative on my car and made it feel really weak, so I had to start over with a new baseline based on MY car's stock timing. The fuel curve is coming along, it adds a little fuel at lower RPM's to compensate for quirky/turbulent aftermarket cone filters.

More to come!

not yet.. The weather here hasn't been good for doing tuning runs for the past few days so I've held off (its been cool and rainy.. inconsistent for making runs at the least)

I have some initial recommendations but I want to make some power runs now that I have the logging software I use somewhat calibrated..

Woohoo.. Here's a FUEL map that I am working on now.. NO TIMING MAP YET..
Boost control set to gradually increase to 100% at the 60%MLP through the entire RPM range.. On my car it Yields 21.6psi peak, with a gradual drop to 17.5psi at 7000RPM

Mods:
Aftermarket OPEN ELEMENT Air filter - This is important to note because they cause cars to run lean..
Buschur Turbo Back setup with a catalytic converter..

I am aiming for an 11.8 or slightly richer AFR through the entire RPM Range and MLP's.. you'll notice I had to add fuel at lower RPMs, partly the MAF reading, partly because of the higher boost..

Sorry about not providing a real map.. you'll have to manually enter those values.. Like I said.. if you have an aftermarket air filter assembly this might help you a bit. Timing map to come later.. This is by no means a final map.. and may need refinement.. It seems to offer a good result without being too radically lean. Notice the 4's.. thats the 'Zone' where my particular filter setup gets 'Cranky' when boost kicks in it goes lean.. I still have yet to get any sort of real knock even though my sensor is functioning.. but I haven't done anything serious with the timing yet.

I think the scaling is off on my worksheet.. I used 250rpm steps on this sheet.. If you guys want I can make a PDF worksheet you can print out so you can fill in information for tuning since it takes several runs and analysing several different data points to fill in the load sites..

How does it feel driving? I have been hesitant to mess with my maps too much because I am still waiting for by gauges! What's the deal with Defi anyway.

It feels good to me.. However I do have the gauges and wideband to feel comfortable with it.. I'll make a new few runs with the new maps tomorrow night when its cooler out.

Ok.. I gained about 10 whp and 17 tq with just this fuel map.. However at 7000 rpm I got a very small amount of knock which caused the timing to retard slightly, so I'm going to add a bit of fuel back.. The power curve is no longer as smooth as before, so I'm going to make some refinements.. Honestly though, I didn't gain all that much over stock and had to add a bit of fuel to low RPM's which helped power at lower RPM's and increased torque from 2600-3500rpm... I had some trouble with my MAP sensor so I couldn't see how boost was doing, but what I did get seemed smoother without as much falloff. The timing at that point stock is pretty aggressive.. so I have a choice.. adjust the timing and remove more fuel, or add a bit more fuel until I stop getting improvements, then adjust timing.
