a quick for you UTEC tuners
a quick question for you UTEC tuners
i was wondering if you guys tuned your ECUs on a dyno or maybe with a program like Data Log Lab. and also is it possible to tune everything with just the use of a program like Data Log Lab.
im just curious because ill be moving to lubbock, tx soon which is 6 hours away from any reputable tuner shop that i could find
. so basically im going with my Plan B, taking an EFI U class and try to tune my evo on my own... and possibly keep my car intact in the process
thanks guys

I've tuned exclusively on the street.. I do all my analysis with Data Log Lab since although the HP numbers aren't totally accurate, its accurate enough to know for certain your getting run to run gains.. Now, you obviously need a wideband O2 sensor (preferrably the tuner since it also has a knock sensor that you can listen to) But you should have a decent set of gauges.. Boost Gauge, EGT Gauge, and Oil Temp, That should be enough info to get an idea of the engines running condition while your tuning.. EGT's will allow you to work with your mixture and timing, because even with a fairly rich mixture, aggressive timing can result in high EGT's which can also do as much damage as detonation.. of course an accurate boost gauge (and also install the MAP sensor if you can since you can log that and view it in data log lab) And Oil temp.. Well, oil temp is a good indicator of overall engine temp, and turbo temp, which will in some ways allow you to see the efficiency of the engine.
Finally, there's one other gauge (pair of gauges) I'd recommend, but its not really practical for most, but I will ultimately place a thermocouple (temp gauge) before and after the intercooler.. Its good to measure how efficient the intercooler is working, plus gives you an idea if your higher boost is just producing heat and no longer useful "work"

i too have just been tuning on the street and track. i have gone as far as i am willing until i get my tuner and guages. i use data log lab in conjunction with my g-tech and track slips.
