S1 Question

Just got these cams installed and I seem to be at a loss here.

Should the initial impression of this cam be an instant increase in power?

Using evoscan it looks like i could have lost power . I installed the cams on my own and everything appears normal. The timing looked dead on when i installed the cams but now i'm starting to question myself.

Could this loss in power be a symptom of the timing being off on the cams?

Oh as a side note i damaged one of my plug wires doing the install. I have since replaced those wires so everything should be ok but it still seems to be off on the power.

Any comments are appreciated

have you done any tuning since installing?

any cam gears?

when i first installed my s1's.....i wasnt impressed. but after a lot of refinement/tuning....I honestly beleive they are the best all around set of cams out there for a evo 8 on pump gas

i prefered my s1's @ -2in/-1 ex.

Yes done a little tuning I think i'm going to have to bring the boost down though at 23psi i'm picking up knock.

Nope no cam gears do you recommend them? I've been told they aren't really useful for low profile cams like the s1's.

I was kinda hoping there was some kind of mechanical test i could use to figure out if i have the cams out of sync or whatnot. Compression test or something.

Oh one more thing Aby was your initial impression of the s1 a gain in power? I was kind of hoping i would feel an extra kick in my pants so to speak but i didn't feel anything so thats why i'm worried.

Same thing happened to me. It took a good tune to really wake them up it seems.

Definitely comforting did a boost leak test today biggest leak i have is a small one out of one of the injector seals. Probably cuasing me minor AFR issues too.

I don't know if i'm going to throw in the 880cc injectors i have in today as it will probably take me most of the day to get the injectors scaled up right.

Trivial update the 880cc precision injectors are install and the car runs fine. Still seems down on power i'm hoping a good couple days of messing around with the tune is going to solve that though

As a side note maybe this injector problem was causing me some knock issues going to find out over the next couple weeks of playing with the tune, I can only do this in my spare time

i have no idea what's going on here.......S1's are in a buddys car and under full boost we have it spiking 29 and tapering down to around 25lbs with no knock at all on 93 octane. Car runs great down low, but seems to lose power up top. 12.3 at 112 was the best run. Sounds like some tuning needs to be done

yes...but nothing like all the reports that were out there......the s1 cams dont have the big torque feeling like hks 272's, but they make more top end power than hks 272's.

the s1 cams offer a linear power band & are very drivable.....this may lead to teh impression that the gain is small, because the power is lifted everywhere a bit....or maybe something is off with the install.

i recomend getting cam gears if you dont already have a set.

btw, get rid of your mbc & learn how to tune your boost with your oem solenoid or a gm 3 port.

if you do not have cam gears, I would recomend getting a set.

You may find the missing power there.

Just my 0.02!

Curious to the reason you want to tune with the oem solenoid what advantage does it provide?

Edit:
Since it takes about a day to get answers on this forum thought i'd ask aby one more Q.

I do plan on upgrading to a maft pro system to run speed density, I know it has a 3 port option. So will the maft pro system handle the 3 port as well as ecu flash? Please advise

out of curiocity what kind of air fuel are you running? all of the S1s i've tuned once the air fuel gets back into check they wake up the engine big time.

What cams did you replace?

Cams change the VE and the tune, among other things, needs to accomidate this. Even after tuning and if you still don't see better dyno results (or steeper rpm slope in your case) there could be something on either end of the system for some reason throwing it off.

Those S1's generally will add power even without tuning

Was doing 11.1 AFR i've dropped it a bit to 10.8 as i play around with the timing trying to wake the car back up. I think i'll get there just take awhile.

And I was replacing the stock cams
