MIVEC is a variable valve timing system. Very similar to the VTEC systems offered by H/A

GDI is Gasoline Direct Injection. That means that instead of Port Fuel Injection, the injectors are right in the combustion chamber. Also, there are changes to the combustion timing, and spark plug placement in order to get more efficient burns.

In other words, you're comparing a cam timing system with a combustion system. Two wholly different animals.

And neither are sold in the US.

As for what's the big deal with engine swaps, MITSUBISHI IS NOT HONDA OR ACURA! Things don't just slide in. Most engine swaps would require custom made mounts, and the entire front end of the car you're swapping from, everything from the engine to transmission to the differentials to the axles and probably even hubs. In other words, you'd be doing probably close to 15K worth of work AT LEAST. So, really, it's possible, but for the LAST TIME IT IS NOT COST EFFECTIVE!

SL is correct. MIVEC is similar to VTEC or VVTLI etc. You'd essentailly be driving a heavier, lower compression Mitsubishi Civic Si. I don't see the appeal. Not to mention that GDI produces far more HP/TQ per liter than MIVEC last I checked (and throughout more of the powerband). our fuel can't cut it for GDI and MIVEC well...Nothing terribly impressive there if you ask me.

what i meant was we should of gotten one or the other GDI or mivec ( i prefer mivec) as a new engine not a existing one liek a 4g94 dohc mivec for example with 11:0:1 pistons i mean it would be a nice dream but we got a sohc fuel saver mivec did 175 hp at the cran on just 1.6 liters imagine that on a 2.0 man well enough dreaming back to reality

Another thing about GDI by the way: It most likely would be impossible to run with our fuel. Our sulphur content is too high.

GDI's torque ratings are far more impressive than its HP too if I remember right.

1.8L GDI is DOHC but also a conservative TQ monster. Mitsu designed it that way.

The 1.6L MIVEC does not seem to have 175 HP. Mitsu must have done a control test which balloned the HP out of reality. Most of us mirage guys suspect it's 155 to 160 HP. Only the cyborgs with I/H/E have been confirmed by their owner of actual producing flywheel HP beyond 175 but under 200 HP.

Word. I have alot of respect for the guys with the good turbos. Takes alot of ***** to be a pioneer, and so ******* what, he's not pulling down Supra numbers? He's still dropped close to three or four (depending on who you ask) SECONDS off of quarter mile compared to stock. And with no traction. I can't wait to see this thing with an LSD, some slicks, strengthened internals, and double digit boost numbers. Then let's see some criticism. People, it is way easier to pick apart numbers, but, I think you're lying to yourself if you say you don't wish you were at liquid's stage of the game, performance wise.

About the MIVEC/GDI stuff.... me and Andrew were wondering, and maybe someone could confirm... is MIVEC AND GDI possible on the same engine. Granted, it sounds like it'd be an impossibly technical beast, and definitely not tuner friendly (I'd be afraid to put boltons on it, much less hardcore mods), but, it'd be interesting nonetheless.

Also, I want to mention that GDI is a system that is unique to Mitsubishi, and gasoline engines in general. MIVEC really, when you get down to it, is nothing special. Mitsu's website has technical pages on it downplayed due to it being an "older" technology, whereas there are several pages about GDI, due to it's revolutionary nature.

GDI is unique to Mitsubishi? I didn't know that. I thought there were plenty of companies with GDI engines overseas.

I don't know that you'd be too happy with MIVEC--I've heard reliability tales. I've actually heard people say that reliability was one of the reasons that they didn't bring it to America, but take that with a grain of salt, since when has Mitsu ever shown itself to care about reliability?

I'm told the reason we don't have GDI over here is because our low-quality gas can't handle it.

Cooooorrect. To much sulfur. As for GDI being unique to , that's not true. A lot of of the other big names are working on creating or have already created similar systems. Mitsu just happened to get there first and has even sold the technology (or at least the engines) to a couple of other manufacturers.

Is Mitsubishi the only company to have direct injection production cars? No, right? I wanna say a german auto maker has some in their European lineup as well. (I wanna say VW)
