Help! Turbo makes a knocking sound!

I just installed a RRM non-ic kit that I bought used and once it was in and the car was started up, the turbo has a knocking sound. Havent revved it or even driven it yet. Any ideas what it is. Bad bearing? I will probably have to bring it to AMS here in Chicago and have it checked out and most likely rebuilt. Anyone know how much it costs. So much for saving money on a used kit! Anyone ever have this problem, is it drivable? If anyone has any quesses I would appreciate it.

If the turbo needs to be rebuilt (due to shaftplay) then i dont recommend driving on it... it'll make matters worse. A normal turbo rebuild (having a company do it for u) would cost around $350 to $400. The parts for the rebuild cost about $120 or so, and you can do it yourself if you are turbo saavy, or have friends that know turboes well.

Old guy killed the turbo then sold it to you. Probably oil starved it to make it die. Rebuild it though.

No, the guy didnt tell me the turbo was bad. I paid about 2400 bucks for it too so this really pisses me off. I dont remember the guys last name, but his name was Nick and he was from New Jersey. I still have his number so I think I am going to call him up and ***** him out.

Yeah, we are going to give AMS a call tomarrow and see what we are looking at. I might try and find someone else if the price is too high. Really sucks, I saved up just the right amount to get a turbo and now I gotta dig up another 350-400 bucks! Any of you guys know of someone or some shop that offers a good deal and good work for rebuilds?
