Question T3/T4 Turbo is it too powerful???

I decided to go turbo, i'm more of an all motor enthusiast but, for the oz lancer... boost is better! I've been looking RRM kits and they are a bit pricey. I have a few friends that want to fabricate our own kit and custom piping. I know road race is using a T28 or T25 turbo but, is a T3/T4 turbo too powerful for our tiny engines

I've seen T3/T4 turbo kits on a 420a engine in a Talon with stock internals.. and that engine is a piece of crap chrysler engine. (trust me I had one.. lol.) It all depends how much boost you are running. Oh, if you are going the custom route with piping and everything, why not get the hacker/tweaker kit from RRM? It comes with a T28 turbo and up-pipe/downpipe and most of the necessary parts for only $1899. That is really cheap. All you would need is the tubing, intercooler, and maybe EGT gauge/boost gauge.

thats the thing i want to purchase the kit but, i dont want the turbo. i can get a new T4 for a little less than $400. but i might consider that to be on the safe side.

Play it safe if you can afford it. I would do some small internal upgrades if I was in your place. I wish you the best of luck and I would like to see you turbo the car. Would make a awesome sleeper. Let us know once you are done....

Actually the 420 is quite a decent motor when tuned properly...but to answer the original question it's not too big if you don't mind a little lag. If you want big boost it's a good way to go, but it's awfully large for low-mid boost levels. If I wanted to run more than 12psi I'd consider it. The turbine itself will not make any difference as far as wear and tear than a smaller turbo at the same boost levels. It's just a higher CFM, higher max boost turbo for setups that sorta "push the limits" a bit more. I think the T28 or T3 is better suited for most mid level boost setups though. For about 7-10 PSI I think either of those two is the best way to go. Less than that I'd say T25 or T28.

A t4 is too big, and its not the same as a T3/T4. The turbine wheel on the hybrid is still a T3 (personally the larges turbine t I'd go on a street driven Lancer).

^^^how many lancers have ran off of a T3 set up? I've mostly seen civics, integras, etc.(hondas) run off of them. From the way things are sounding i should get the RRM hacker/ tweeker kit and do my own custom piping but, RRM is played out. Too many people run to them for the solution. Don't get me wrong they have great products but, with the price they want for their kit you can build a better one with better performance.

T3's are probably the most common turbo I can think of in US production cars. There are several different trims, but they are still more or less the same. I don't think anyone could accurately gauge how many are on Lancers, but my car has/had a T3 Super 60. It's about as close to a T3/T4 as you can get without actually having a hybrid.

Here is my take on turbo choice. You have to look at the turbo's effective range and how much horsepower you want to make, and how much lag you can live with. A T3 Super 60, IMO, is the BEST turbo for the Lancer and the Mirage, because it falls right into the sweet range of HP (225 - 275 whp) that can be handled safely. A t3/T4 will pack more punch but it will be less boost responsive. Case in point. My buddy had a regular T3 with a crappy Stage 1 wheel setup in his Mirage and hit 225whp. Boost came in about 2500 RPMs. I have a monstrous T3/T4E and I hit boost about 2900, full boost about 3500 - 3600 RPMs. Then again, if I ever find that lucrative money tree, I will be using the effective range of this turbo which is 350 - 450 whp. Then, my good friend, she has a T3/T4 in her 1.5L Mirage, and she doesnt get boost until 4K. She likes it that way tho, so she saves gas, but it all depends on where you want your power.

thats right airquez i am getting about 265-280 miles on my T3/T4 setup
while normal driving...i miss my RRM kit only cuz it boosted much earlier
with this set up it is boosting @3900RPM but damn when it boosts it boosts
all the way through 6800RPM its HAULS i love the powerband. the advantage is that i get pretty damn good mileage for 300+ WHP
