I think you guys know I try to do a lot of homework before I come on here to ask questions, so I'm going to try and keep them all to one thread while I work on this project. I'm also trying to compile things in a Word doc as I learn so when this is all said and done we can have an idiots guide to turbocharging a lancer.

Today's Topic: BOV Selection and Strategy

I understand the concepts of VTA and recirc, what I'm more concerned with right now is the physical connection of the BOV. If I do custom piping, I will need to buy a flange to weld. That would require yet another trip to a shop which, for the moment, I'd rather keep to a minimum as I want to do as much as possible myself. I already know that I won't be able to do any part fabrication myself, so trips to a shop are inevitable, but I'd like to know as much as I can about the DIY route.

1. So I can speak intelligently in the future, what is the name for the pipe that the BOV (or BOV flange) is attached to?

2. What types of BOVs could I attach to stock EVO piping with and w/o purchasing an additional flange?

 

1. As far as I've ever read - just a pipe. You can name it if you want.

2. Anything that's sold for the Evo, but why are you using the stock Evo piping? I think they use a hose to connect the BoV though, not a flange.

My advice: Buy a flange and gasket along with the BoV, have it welded to your piping (be it custom or the stock Evo piping if it fits). You'll have one less likely place for a boost leak, it will mount more securely, and it will look cleaner.

 

1) that pipe is the upper intercooler pipe. you can go jdm and get a pipe welded to it, then connect a coupler from that pipe to another pipe with the BOV flange welded to it. that way if you want to run a different BOV later, you can just change the flanged pipe to one with the appropriate flange for the new BOV.

2) get the 1g dsm BOV or the new evo 8/9 metal BOV. cheap and will hold 18 lbs. if you go with 1), then you can run whatever BOV you like.

Where would one go to find things like max hp and other specs for turbos? i have been unsuccessful in my searching thus far.

 

CHeck the sticky "how to read compressor maps" to get an idea of how to read compressor maps and then apply that knowledge to the map of the turbo you are going to get.

Or if you are lazy, just PM me ...........

does a saab t25 for $100 seem way too low to anyone else? i'm leery of buying a turbo off of ebay, although i don't know what i'd be looking for in REAL life either.




"This is a "used" Saab T25 turbo off of my turbo Honda Project. It didn't smoke or leak, has minimal shaft play. Compressor wheel blades and assembly are in great shape, and spins freely. No damaged/bent fins on intake or exhaust side. Water line banjo bolts included, as well as an oil feed line banjo bolt is included... an oil drain flange is also included. This turbo utilizes an internal wastegate set @ 9psi, included. Turbo also uses a T-25 flange. A/R: intake; .48, Exhaust; .46. "
