project "Road Rage"

Ok, after about a year or so, of reading, learning, and asking a lot of dumb questions, I finally bought a turbo. I just made the payment. $430 for an evo8 turbo, megan mani, and forged wategate.

Over the next four months I will be buying the rest of my parts. If I can keep a tight budget I might have enough for some second hand low comp. forged pistons. Maybe after she's boosted. We'll see.

I'm gonna try to keep this thread to a min. I am gonna save the pictures for the install and one final when its all said and done. I plan on keeping track of how much I spend, for the futre noob who wants to know exactly how much it cost.

I'm calling it project "Road Rage". Probably not the most original, but I haven't herd anyone else use it. Its a 2001 Mirage 1.8 LS coupe. 17" wheels and tires from the tire rack, Tokico HP non-adj., and ebay strut bars. With just over 100k miles on the chasis and drivetrain, it runns with no problems.

The car is a blast to drive and I cant wait to see what a bit of boost on a 2400lb car is going to feel like.

Dibsen,

Sorry to diviate from your post but are you stationed at Hurlburt Field? or Eglin?, I saw that you live in Fort Walton Beach.. I had great times there when I was stationed there(98-00).

Good luck on your turbo project by the way. How much boost are you planning to run? Are you changing the solenoid so that you can run really low boost?l

Carlos

Update on Road Rage,
So far my quest for parts has been fairly sucsessful. Almost all of the parts came from Evom, Evo private sales. The only piece that continues to give me a hard time is the Emanage. I was out bid on ebay several times. I had one lined up from a Nisan forum. I sent the guy his money and paypal sent it back. Turned out, he sold it on ebay the day befor I sent him the money.

here is a list of the parts I have picked up so far:
16g6 turbo, megan mani, foeged wg- 430
evo8 ic w/pipes, evo8 fuel pump, LC1 wideband- 295
elec. boost gauge- 88
egt gauge- 55

very nice im doing the same thing. the parts i have right now are megan racing manifold for a 2g eclipse gst, megan downpipe, and an evo3 big 16g turbo. im gonna take my car to AMS in a couple weeks to check out their intercooler kit. i just find this all kind of funny because everyone spends up to about 4g's on their turbo and im building my for less than 2500. im still waiting to get the fuel injectors and pump but i have plenty of time cuz my second motor is still on the stand, started to tear it down and currently installing forged pistons and rods. im also looking into a head swap but i dont think im gonna go that far.

OK, I picked up the last big piece for the build, the Emanage. I tryed to bid again on ebay. After being out-bid, I found one with a "Buy it Now" option and picked it up for $350 and it was still New condition w/ suport tool. Here are a few more items I have accquired.

New Areomotive fpr kit (w/steel lines, AN fittings and guage) -280
460cc rx7 saturated inj (cleaned and tested)-260
stock evo dp -85
stock evo o2 housing and heat shield -30
adj cam gear -50

I also picked up a clutch kit, ACT heavy duty -315

That brings the total to 1923 befor the clutch kit. I was origally aiming to spend 1500 for the turbo parts. That goal could have been met if I waited to find good deals on the forums. I could have got the injectors for around 120 and I could have got a better deal on the fpr. However, The fuel system is not an area I wanted to go cheap in. Now I did get an evo 8 fuel pump but I only paid 15 for it. That is more of an experiment but I think it will work just fine.

There are still a few odds and ends I need to pic up, blow-off valve is one that stick out right now. And I still have 3 months left in the desert, so I hope I can put a hold on my spending for now.

Next is the build and I cant wait to get wrenching on the Rage. I am hoping a couple of my buddies are going to be willing to help me out. I don't want to spend 2 weeks doing everything myself. I think if I can get three solid helpers, I can get it done in 3 to 4 days. We'll see.

ok well, I have been haveing a hard time putinga hold on the spending(I get board). I bought a welder and I almost bought a helical lsd(still for sale @ mirage net). but now I am done till I get home.(still got to buy xmas gifts and trip to boston, Oiy!)

I don't have the kit in yet but here is the futre plan. If everything goes good and I love the way it turns out then next year I'll build the motor and keep the car forever. Option 2, I have a hell of a time during install and need professionall assitance(yah right) and, in the end, I'm not satisfied with the car. I'd sell the kit, put the car back to stock and sell it and be done with it. Next car

So thats long run. Right now I am trying to figure out a good plan of attack that will alow me to get the most work done simultianeously. I want to move the battery to the trunk. Remove the front bumper and radiator. Remove the exhaust system. I think me and 2 guys can do all that in an hour give or take. Also drain out the oil and weld a tube for the return line. I think after that I want to do the fuel pump. That might take 1.5 hrs. say 2 (these are just estmets, I'm not trying to set a record) More in a bit...

I have to walk a damn city block to go to the bathroom... anyway. After thats done I am going to start bolting up the mani, turbo downpipe make sure it all fits right. Then run the oil lines for the turbo. Then I have to remove the inj. and put in the new ones. Then the fpr. I might be around the 5 hour mark at that time and the garage will prob. close I be able to get everything except the emanage in the first day. I think I'll do the rest at the house. The emanage, egt and boost gauge, and the lc-1 wideband. Is that it? I must have missed something. Intercooler, that can get done at the house. Adj, cam gear.. at the house.

ok, you guys let me know what I forgot. I think thats enough writing for one night.

What's up guys. Well I am finally back from a long deployment in Iraq. I didn't get to kill as many people as I would have liked but it is good to be home.

I started lookingh through my garge full of parts this morning an got mad while I was inspecting the turbo. It has a Forge WGA but there is a spot weld on the acctuator arm keeping it closed. So I am thinking I'll have to carefully breake the weld with the dremel, unless someone has a better way to go about that.

I will post up some pics tonight so you guys can see what I mean. Other than that I haven't found my injectors yet and I was a little thrown off with the FPR. I also want to try and find a steering colum, dual gauge pod. I was messing around with the mounts I have and just don't like the way they look.

Again, when my wife gets back from work I'll take some pics.

I still need to get my cheep *** Megan mani re-flanged. I plan on putting the batt in the trunk and doing the fuel pump first. Does anyone know if I will have prob running the evo pump w/ stock inj? I kind of want to install parts one at a time so I know they work.

You won't have a problem running an Evo fuel pump with stock injectors. Your injectors, though, will be the weak point in your fuel system as you increase boost and will eventually need to be swapped out for larger units.

OK. How do I seperate the hot side of the turbo from the chra? I took off the band holding the two parts together but it won't budge.
