turbo wont make whining noise???
going to a smaller turbo wont increase the sound. Its going to need to run more boost like i said before. My TT comes with a tiny *** turbo (the inlet is about 1.5") and you can only here it spool with an open element intake and running over 1bar boost. Even running it at 20psi isnt all that loud. Now 20psi on a 50trim would be way louder.
want a loud turbo... grab a mbc and crank your boost up.. you are not running enough boost for the turbo to make the spooling noise... dont get angry at people, your the one complaining that your car doesnt make cool sounds....
He can't crank up the boost unless he plans on replacing the rods, pistons and the head gasket. If you went to a truly tiny turbo and maxxed out the boost, you could hear the noise and not risk the motor but instead you'd be risking the turbo and sacrificing performance for a sound. I can only hear my turbo when I have the windows down and I'm going slow.
Smaller turbos make huge low end torque (stock vw/audi turbos make 230+ before 3k). Low end tq breaks rods far easier than psi does. Not to mention pressure is pressure.
They break transmissions too (as many WRX owners know). I'm not sure what kind of risk the rods would be at since most people seem to blow the pistons before they snap the rods. No one said it was a good idea but if the sound is that important, go for it.
im going to put a new map on today, turn up the boost and see what happens, i agreed w the small turbo concept, except, when i first put this turbo on months ago, (this is this cars 3rd turbo, and smaller than the first two already), i had the turbo turned a certain way , and the exhaust flowed straight back, i think it was bigger piping also, and this thing at like 6 psi would spool and sound great, now its turned another way , sitting up higher in the engine compartment and the exhaust flow is going left down then back , so thats why im trying to figure out why i cant get the same noise
Be very careful turning up the boost. From what I remember you were having problems with boost spikes which can quickly kill your motor (since you're stock internally). With the size of turbo you're using, I highly doubt turning it up a PSI or two is going to make it go from whisper quiet to screamingly loud. As I said before, logically I can't see it being an exhaust issue since you are flowing enough exhaust to hit your desired pressure and much of the system is not related to the turbo anyways.
Cincy, the WRX trannies are glass compared to the STI's 6-speed but they're not as bad as people make them out to be. Like everything on the internet you have to take the stories with a grain of salt.

Well you've been given the same answer from many different people so at this point you either need to buy a new turbo, buy a new car or just accept the fact that you have a quiet car (something many people would be jealous about).
you probably don't know what your are listening for. EVERY car that is turbo'ed has the turbo "whine". From stock audi 1.8t's, evo's, etc. they all whine because of the air passing through them and the speed they are spinning at... Some are quieter than others but you can still hear it perfectly fine. Are you venting your wastegate to atmosphere? Because if so, that will easily drown out the turbo noise.

No, you really wont. With 11psi and the stock air box you wont here the dv or turbo make a single noise. Even with a intake you will barely here either. You need almost 20psi before you hear the turbo and dv with a intake

I.E and 100% stock GTI turbo 1.8t/Audi 1.8t BONE STOCK (including intake) run somewhere between 7 and 10 lbs of boost and you can hear them spooling plain as day
Yes, you WILL hear the turbo on 99.9% of cars. I have never come across a car that you cannot hear the turbo. If it is really muffled by a lot of catalytic converters and a very good stock air box it will be hard to hear but it is still there.
