turbo wont make whining noise???
you wont hear the turbo until you remove the airbox and/or have a chip that raises boost to 18-20psi. It just dosnt move enough air. The 7psi GTI's only make 150bhp, thats less CFM than a stock Ralliart.
I know, i have 2 1.8t's

Easy to hear the turbo in first gear:

As I said before, I can only really hear my turbo when the windows are down, when I'm inside I can't hear a damn thing. No offense iufan4lifeul, but I would think the people that drive a turboed car every day would know whether their own car makes the distinctive sound.
Exactly my point amby, you CAN hear the turbo, even if it is with the windows down. That WRX is running pretty low boost with what I am assuming mostly stock and with the windows down you can hear it. Cincy is stating that the turbo on cars is silent. If you put an intake on your car you would hear it much more clear.
I know for a fact a bone stock 1.8t A4's turbo can be heard plain as day windows up or down as do most stock turbo car's.

Cincy must not drive his TT hard, he even says that is quiet... Either that or he has a newer one than '03 and they made great improvements in sound deadening... Our TT's turbo is just like the Evo's was only lower volume, kinda like if Evo Vol = 20, TT vol = 10. You can DEFINITELY still hear it, it just isn't the MAIN sound like it was in the Evo. Maybe you're going deaf? Or maybe you've driven turbo'd cars for so long you forgot what non-turbo sounds like? I've driven plenty of cars that I can see someone not being able to hear the turbo and THINKING you can't hear it at all, but I sure can hear it... Maybe its because I love the sound so much. Or maybe my ears are just that good.
with a stock turbo and stock intake your not going to the turbo in the car. Possibly with the window down, but not likely. There isnt enough flow and the stock airbox kills all noise. You cant even hear the dv with the airbox on. With the boost increased and/or a intake, you can hear the turbo just fine.
I am far from babying my car. The car is now being stroked to 2L and will be built up with a gt3582r (gt35r) and will make close to 600whp. So im far from easy on the car. Before the car went in the stock turbo was pushed to 20psi and full exhaust.
So basically what im saying is you need either to:
a) move a lot of air
or
b) have the turbo spin fast with higher boost to hear it
both with a open element intake of course

LOL, your going to argue with me? The turbo for the last time on all 1.8's in stock form wont be loud enough for you to go...."ya hear it". The turbo running 7-11psi (depending on model) just doesnt move enough air or spin fast enough to give off a loud whistle. Not to mention the aixbox just muffles the noise. Sure, you remove the airbox and even do the exhaust so you can hear it. But once you chip the car and increase the boost to 18-22psi you wont have any trouble hearing the turbo.
These cars your calling "stock" may have the stock turbo, but they arent stock.

obviously you can not decipher a turbo's noise from that of the rest of the engine. How come you can hear the turbo on those other clips I posted of the 1.8t? A stock 1.8t's turbo CAN be heard in the car even with the windows up. It isn't loud by any means, but with stock exhaust etc. the rest of the car is quiet enough to hear the turbo.
Yep, obviously deaf. iufan4lifeu is totally right, I have NEVER been in a turbo'd car and not been able to at least barely hear the turbo with the radio and the hvac fan off.
Then it was far from a stock car. German cars are made quite. If you can hear the turbo, then its not stock.
Here is a chiped car w/ 3x the boost 7 to 20psi on some rollers. It sounds like it still has the airbox and since you can slighlty hear the turbo

It most definitely is 100% stock, I wish it wasn't. And either you really are hard of hearing, or haven't been in a 335i or 911TT, both of them also have audible turbos, just like every other turbo car. Luxury turbo cars are made quiet, yes, German or not... But the point is is that there is something pushing air, and that push of air makes a noise... Maybe my ears just really are THAT good...
