yes, ethanol has great resistance to knock.
thats why people switch over to e85.

i cant wait for a closer station to open up in my city.
i'd like to see the difference in power

oh i see what you mean.

well the highest regular gas cali people get is 91

so e85 is an easier alternative for us because its available at stations rather than storing race fuel

Then stop running higher octane than you need.

Your car can't use it so the fuel isn't fully burned.

Are you running a piggy back or something that messes with the ecu on the car? If you were then I would understand you running premium gas.

I fuel up with Unocal 76 Premium 91 in CA.

**OOPS...this is the Lancer forum....anyways...this is what I use in my Evo 8.

Ambystom is right. A higher Octane is harder to burn, so even if you were tuned for 110, if your not on a track all the time under boost ALL THE TIME, gas mileage is gonna suck on the highway and in town, because you are not burning all the gas. And, if you have to then try to pass emmisions, HC's are going to be through the roof.... My motorcycle MUST burn 91, but it only requires that rating when above about 9,000RPMs. I myself did an emmisions test and HC's at idle were 2700! Ideally the number should be about 200 or less with a bike. At 9,000 revs the number drops to about 400, and the bike revs to over 14,000. So, its somewhat the same with boost.... How often are you under boost? Ambystom is absolutely correct to say that you should try to use the lowest possible octane rating while still eliminating knock. This will give you te best milege and even power, because you are now burning all of the gas, not half of it. The lower the number, the higher the heat, and heat makes power. So if you can use it, 91 is probably going to be the best and safest for your car.

Actually a lower octane rating is going to start better at lower temps. A higher octane rating is less volitile, meaning it is harder to vaporize. If it can't be vaporized, you are injecting pure liquid gasoline into your engine, and liquid gas DOES NOT BURN. So a lower number is going to start better. I've lived in ND most of my life, so I know what its like.
