You could heat wrap the exhaust, that should help a bit.

wraps hold in moisture and QUICKLY cause rust.

Tho raps stop more heat.

If your running a turbo header, heat wrap WILL crack the header in addition to the rust. If your running a plain manifold, then heat wrap is good, just a pain to put on. Heat wrap keeps the temps so high inside it that it will eat the welds of a turbo header. Dont do it. My NA header was wrapped and it destroyed the welds. My exhaust guy told me how bad it was for headers and I wont ever use it again. Get a good vented hood. Just my $0.02.

It depends on the header used and the quality.

Not according to exhaust shops in my area it doesnt. And the general turbo header used on a lancer isnt a super good quality header to begin with. They should always call it by its real name, manifold wrap. Not header wrap.

Plenty of Subaru people wrap their exhausts, up-pipes, etc.

subaru is two cylinders on each side though. Your not getting the heat from all four cylinders in one area. By the time it makes it down the pipes, its cooled considerably and you shouldnt have any problems. My biggest problem wasnt the welds, as that took three to four months to happen. It was the fact that I was constantly having to replace the gasket where my header connects to the downpipe. Weekly. I used the most quality gaskets I could find, but they were all toast within a week. The first one actually lasted the longest, at about a month. My car was not running too lean or too rich either, kept constant watch on wideband.

The heat per runner should be the same though, it's one cylinder per runner regardless. It's odd that there's such an issue with welds/gaskets, do Evos have the same problem if they heat wrap?

Might just be that Soobys have a hood scoop and Lancers do not . The air flow threw the scoop cools down enough while Lancer bays tend to get a little hotter because of the lack of fresh cool air in the engine bay .

I dont know about the evos. I just know that I went through exhaust gaskets like crazy and here are my welds after header wrap.

Also, alot of people tend to wrap the runners all together to try to save on the hassle of wrapping individually. I did not, but this still happened. Btw, the scoop wouldnt have anything to do with it. The engine bay cools considerably with the addition of header wrap, but the wrap is an insulation. It keeps the hot air in and at the same time, keeps the cold air out. I used 1/8in. header wrap too by the way.

The scoop is for the intercooler, it isn't open to the rest of the engine bay. Our engines get very hot but they're designed to deal with it like Evos and other OEM turbocharged cars. Another option would be to run piping or something from the front bumper to some part of the engine bay ala brake coolers.

Thats what I was thinking too amby. I just didnt know if it might have another purpose as well other than the intercooler. Im not super suby man lol.
