a quick turbo question... is it worth it?

So basically I have a 2003 Lancer OZ Rally. Like others i have gotten the urge for more power, however, i have nearl 160,000 miles. Is it still okay to go forced? Or am I better off investing in a new car or staying natural? Any help would be appreciated!

IMHO.. go turbo. there is no drug like boost, but it would all depend on how much money you want to spend. New car= money, turbo= money, all motor aint worth the money. that just me though..good luck on whatever you decide bro.

To me i think it's a little more complicated than that. How much money do you owe on the lancer? Have you been doing maintenance like you should have? Murphy law says as soon as you put the turbo on your wheel bearings, water pump, and radiator will crap out. Just be ready to deal with car issues not related to the turbo.

yeah, I would say depending on your maintenance. If the car is well taken care of then go for it. Me for example my car has 167k, I just replaced the radiator, thermostat, doing the water pump right now and this is with me taking good care of my car. My car has been turboed since about 150k I think and since putting the turbo on this things have come up.

If you do it, upgrade the cooling system and anything else that might get pushed by the turbo being on. The car has alot of mileage on it and adding the turbo will put more stress on this parts now.

Final verdict is go turbo though. Its fun as heck!!!!

Definitely a new radiator may be in order. When was the last time you changed your timing belt? I'd say go for it if you've been keeping up with your car. Just be ready to buy more than just turbo parts.

I don't owe anything on my car but being a student I have a fairly limited budget monthly. It would be a slow build if at all. Am I better off trying to foresee problems before and replace those parts right away? (radiator, cooling, rods, injectors, head, etc?) Or just wait for them to fail? It would be a fairly large purchase for me and I don't want to get it installed and come to destroy my engine within a few thousand miles you know

My honest opinion if your gonna do a turbo, spend the money to freshin up the motor take them miles off it and build it from the ground up. 160k is a ton of miles and as people were saying yeah you start adding more power its not gonna last very long. On a side note I will throw a plug out for Chad. When your ready to do this contact CBRD I know they do stuff for the RA.

Dude, are you kidding me?! Check my sig, which links to the first sticky at the top of the turbo page, and you have about 8 build threads on that same page!

that and you say you're a mechanic that has done turbo builds on RWD cars...yet you have no idea where to start...makes no sense, you start by stating your qualifications and experience with turbocharged engines and cars, then you ask a question like you have no idea what you're even asking about...it's a little weird...

FWD will be the same as RWD, except there's no drive shaft, all other principles of turbocharging the motor will be the same, and the parts will be the same obviously except vehicle specific parts...

I always recommend upgrading to a turbocharged platform to begin with-

typically you are getting bigger brakes, a more robust drivetrain, etc etc----

plus when you sell the car- it will have a higher re-sale value...

I think the general response I am getting is yes! Ill start piecing it together hopefully soon and see if I can be finished by mid-summer. Planning on a head rebuild, fuel pump, 16g turbo, turbo manifold, custom IC pipes, evo 8 downpipe, HKS BOV, AEM FPR, AEM piggyback?, possibly wrx 440 injectors, rrm test pipe, and will gather gauges as I go. Sound about right?

no FPR needed, if you are installing the 440 injectors. No piggyback needed either, you can flash an evo ROM into your ECU.
