Question

Is it possible to have 3" turbo back exhuast for our lancer, if not what is the biggest we can go? Oh! by the way what is the size of the downpipe on the RRM turbo kit? Is it possible for an upgrade for the exhuast like 3" turbo back exhuast? Thanks

I think 2.5" was optimal for our engines with turbo. Im not really sure what the theory behind this is, but i think 2.5 or 2.75" is the best.

and i think RRM's kit comes with 2.5" downpipe for that "reason". sorry i dont know the specifics

3" would fit no problem, but you'd lose so much backpressure that the car wouldn't even be worth turboing.

2.5" is optimal, and that seems to be the general concensus among tuning shops. Stick with 2.5 and you'll be fine, go over, and you'll lose too much down low.

exhaust systems depend on the turbo. the less backpressure you put on a turbo, the quicker it will spool. With a 3" system, you will lose a little in the low end, but that's easily made up in a faster spooling turbo.

But exhaust sizes are application specific, so I would trust what everyone has said with sticking with a 2.5" system, although it would be beneficial if you could drive a 2.5 system and then drive a 3" system and compare

"Backpressure" is provided by the turbine in a turbocharged car. It's pretty much a non-issue. I think the real issue is clearance by the rear suspension/sway bar. People are clanging it with 2.5" exhausts so I'd imagine a 3" will beat the **** out of it. I have one of the larger turbos and one of the larger exhausts (as far as I know no one is over 2.5") on a Lancer and torque is NOT an issue whatsoever.

Nobody makes a 3" and hardly any shops have 3" SS piping in stock (as compared to 2.5") to fab you one without ordering the piping and charging you for it. Personally I'd recommend 2.5" unless you're out to prove something one way or another.

Man Andrew!!! You need to stop reading my thoughts! . He is correct the turbo itself creates enough retriction in the exhaust. As said, the best exhaust for a turbo charged vehicle is no exhaust BUT for one it is illegal and the other it would get really loud and annoying runnning an open DP. Even then you had better have one hell of a ported or upgraded wastegate...LOL. I also agree that 2.5 is plenty for you. The lancer even in its basic T/C'ed state isnt really making a whole lot of exhaust. I mean look at me I have a Forced Performance big T28 running 15-17 psi and the 2.5 cat suites me fine. That's alot more exhaust than you would be pushing out!

I have 2.5 mandrel bent from the turbo to muffler. 2.5 is optimal for what I got. but in some cases 3" would be optimal, depends on built your motor is/how much boost youre running/etc. Hobie what size is your exhaust 2.75? mine is loud as **** :/

My exhaust is 2.5 cat-back. But i have daul maxspeed mufflers. I was think of getting rid of one and use the other. The turbo i'm using is an t3. But in hawaii we dont have any smog test, all we have is an safty inspection. Which is they check if everthing on the car is working fine, like brakes, turn signal etc. But if you upgrade any thing on the car you would need recon. What i'm trying to say is that i could go without any exhaust and stil pass the inspection. But anyways thanks to everyone on their in put, it really helps alot.
