Boost leak kills my Dyno run!!

Bad news for the Stage 2 Dyno run. Pretty nasty boost leak caused me to only Dyno 170 to the wheels. Torque was 200. Dynojet dyno. Pulled in 4th. Boost was barely holding at 5-6psi.... Weird thing is when I get on it on the street I can hit max PSI, but it must be the turbo overcompensating for the leak. A/F was off the map rich but to be expected with the leak..

Am going to hook it up to a compressor to find the leak...

Met Waggi32 and he Dynoed as well running his Stage 1... I'll let him post up his results though.

Who knows, Have to make a pressure tester to pressurize the system and find out. Could be the pipes, Wastegate, the Driver Himself?

Yeah, boost leaks are a ***** to diagnose I know. But generally speaking it's the BoV with too loose of a spring, or a vac hose blown off. In those cases it's easy to find. But when you have to go over each vac hose checking for cracks, splits, tears and holes...oh man. What a *****.

yup..we fabricated a piece to hook up to the air compressor and should find it tonight...I'm betting on the wastgate gasket...

170whp on 5-6psi on 4th gear? and you're intercooled with all the stuff you have on already? damn.. so what does that mean for me with a non-ic at 5psi? like 140whp? damnit.. need to do my pistons and rods so i can boost 15 already!.. haha j/m.. good numbers even with the leak.. hope you find it.. let us know..

That'd be an exhaust leak. There can be a huge difference between an exhaust leak (turbine side) and a boost leak (compressor side). One of the largest being CO poisoning. Check for carbon buildup on or around every joint and pipe on the exhaust side. If you were running rich it will leave some buildup.

edit: Exhaust leaks are easy to pinpoint for the most part. Boost leaks however are a royal PITA.

twinkie - even a small leak will result in massive loss of hp. and this could be a big leak, who knows right now. i wouldn't start basing the kits hp on these numbers since they are pretty wrong. i wouldn't let them sway your opinion, let him fix the leak and see whats goin on from there, also maybe waggi32 will post his stage 1 results?

yea, but if he had this leak for a period of time and didn't know about it until the dyno then could all of his talk about how great the kit is be false.. i dont knwo, just trying to look at the big picture

Fixed! Plus dyno sheet!

Alright...we found it. 2 leaks actually. One was my own damn fault. I got a red silicone hose kit a few weeks back. I replaced the large black hose from the top of the valve cover to the intake manifold. I used too large diameter of silicone hosing and there was a massive airflow loss when we hooked it up to the compressor. The other was a very small crack in a small u piece of vacuum hose you can see roughly where the smaller arrow is in the pic.

On the way home tonight it was WAY quicker. After the Dyno I really noticed if I held the RPM's at a certain level under boost, it would creep down and lose pressure. Not now. Holds boost and pulls like crazy. I can hear the difference now when it starts boosting. Also, my A/F guage is now giving a less rich reading at WOT. Look at the Dyno sheet. It hits max HP at 4250 RPM because it gets so rich. I was just hitting the sweet sopt in the powerband at 4250 and already at 170. Should have no problem reaching over 200 next time. The ECU was dumping in excess fuel as the MAF was reading a ton of unaccounted for air. I guarantee the A/F is way better and the power is up. Well, hopefully I can get some cheap Dyno time as I am pumped to see what I will throw up now.

You aren't kidding about being able to hear it. Good lord, it sounds like it's about to blow your hood off. Lol. Glad you found the problem areas and got them fixed. Any idea as to when you'll be heading to the dyno?

If anything the kit would be better assuming the leaks weren't design flaws. I can't see that being the case either, due to the sheer number of kits out there. Things like that happen.
