How to you check the polarity of a subwoofer without pulling it out of the box and checking all of the wires ? Using a battery like you do speakers ? Will a AA do or is 9V needed ?

 

a 1.5v AA should do this, I wouldnt dare try it with anything of a higher voltage.

if u have ur polarity straight (+ with + on bat and - with - on bat) then the cone should pop out a tiny bit, if u have it reversed the cone will move into the basket.

 

AA prob wont work as it is only like 3.5 Volts or something like that. 9 volt will work. I usally use my batt from my cordless drill. Just make sure both are the same (going in and out t ogether). Going out is posotive on the speaker to posotive on the sub

 

take 2 wires off the box and plug them into your 120V wall socket.....its ok


um, feel the sub, it will either be hitting in or out.

 

If you do that it will be AC and the sub will be hitting both in and out. And if you hold it there for too long it will blow the sub for you (I know, Ive done it like 50 times on purpose)

9v batt works fine or cordless drill batt.

 

...we have a few home audio subs (Definitive's 8" from the Supercubes) that can be plugged into the wall and left there for long... long... long periods of time and be fine...its fun

 

For entertainment in my shop, we plug in old speakers all the time. It's not as cool as putting a CD in the microwave though.

polarity or phase is relative. Being in phase is a time distance relationship between your ears and the speaker. I always try subs both ways and see whcih sounds best. Unless I drag out the IASYS and measure the phase curve in car.

 

Agreed - CDs in microwaves rock.

We've got a few sub boxes around the shop that are mysteriously tuned to 60hz ... wonder why?
