ah yes...good points. sometimes i just assume that everyone just listens to dance music. but yes, the smaller the sub, the better response because you have less surface area/mass to move for each bass note. so if you listen to a lot of rock or other with mild bass....yes yannotmi you are correct you want a smaller sub. bigger subs are gonna be a little sloppier, but can usually handle more power and pump a bigger volume of air=louder.

the trick is, however, that not all small subs can't be loud. you can get a 10" that outperforms a 12". there are many factors in deciding what sub to get. box design, wattage, efficiency (key factor that is overlooked!), weight, etc....

but to be honesty, if you have to ask questions about it, chances are you aren't that much of an audiophile anyway, and 1 12" sub with enough power to your liking will do just fine.

yep yep.

I just picked up a jl audio 10 w 7 yesterday.
I know with a 1000 watt amp that I got it should out preform any single 12 and a lot of 15s.

and bump a bit more too!

I had 1" 12" Solobaric l7 sub and the thing romped like no other. If you want some serious bass, look into these. Good tight bass and good sound quality.

the key to getting a good sound out of your system is the amp. don't cheap out on the amp, and make sure that it can give enough power to the speaker. 1 12" sub (if that's what your taste prefers) will sound fine, especially if it was good enough in your old car.
true true...so basically u just need to get the amp. then from there, pick out the speakers that best suit the amp.

The first thing to consider is the type of music you're listening.

If it's bad *** hip hop or r & b, go with one or two 12".. or even one 15" with a good amp. The time between the bass kicks is long so your amp, even if it's not a $$$$ thing will delivedr the good for deep bass and shaky.

If you want tight bass for punk/techno/ all that have fast passed basslines, go with two 10" and killer amp. The amp needs to be powerful because the bass are not far apart and therefore if you have a not so good amp, it won'T play the bass notes apart.

12" are in the middle, but if you listen to fast paced music, get a really, really good amp if you want it to sound right.

Since you have one 12 already, you can just get a really good amp and you should have a good all around setup.

Once again, ported boxes have a dofferent sound than sealed, or other more complex types (dual reflex, etc)..

A ported box usually needs less power from the amp compared to a sealed one. But the sound on a sealed is way tighter.

True, IMO the non rattle sound is better, unless you get it matted which btw apx how much does that cost. I have a sealed box and want to mat my trunk, and another thing when I go around corners my box slides causing my carpet to get f---ed up. How can I prevent this?

MrSpace is correct it really depends on what kind of music you like! I have 2 10" rockford's that play rock good (kind of over power the factory speakers to much) but it does take some good tweaking to get any settings right!
