Head Unit Sizes

I'm looking at stereos to fit in my new OZ and hoping some people can give examples of head units that fit well or not at all.

Crutchfield has these size codes, of which they specify J as the size in the Lancer. I'm noticing the selections not all that great though... It looks like I and E receivers should be alright, but with a gap as they are slightly smaller. Does anyone know how much smaller they are? I can't find dimensions anywhere.

Pioneer DEH-P8400MP. Fits fine for me, and its IEJ as well. You can search for your vehicle in Crutchfield, and if it says EZ install, it will be just that, easy.

Personally, if you're looking to get a new head unit, I'd wait a couple months. The 2003 models are just starting to come out, and should all be out by April. There might be a really cool new Pioneer head unit (there is one already, the 6500 has OEL and a WRC screen saver. Looks sweet for only like 250 at Best Buy), or you can pick up a 2002 model cheap on a closeout sale. Check out these sites for good prices.

www.mmxpress.com
www.etronics.com
www.pricegrabber.com (search for the model you like, and it will find the lowest prices around)

Hope this helped.

I'm a big fan of Blaupunkt, but I'm not against a little modifying to get the stereo I want. My stereo in my old car is a Blau and any newer Blau I would want is the same IE size. I can't really justify the cost of something new when it won't even fit better, so I think I'll just try hooking up my stereo from my old car to see how well it fits when some of this snow goes away.

Perhaps come April I will find something much cheaper - lots of the 2002 and even 2001 models are still too expensive for their features if you ask me...

Blaupunkt, another great brand. Their S/N ratios are some of the highest, and they have probably the lowest (and therefore the best) FM sensitivity.

Check out that last link neilscully. You might be surprised at how cheap you can find some of these things.

My favorite thing about Blaus is actually their ability to play CDs skip-free so well. Their holographic pickup is incredible, which will be particularly valuable with the suspension and chassis stiffening mods I'm planning. The fact that thei signal is so clean is a huge plus of course...

I just wish they had a CD/MP3 player that would fit well - I hate the look of spacers and if I'm gonna spend money on replacing the head unit in my old car, then I figure I should at least get one that will be a better fit. That's why I'm so curious about how big the gaps are so I can get an idea for how it will all look before ripping apart a couple of dashboards.

That link is pretty cool by the way - looks to offer some $10-$50 savings over Crutchfield's prices for some stuff - not too shabby...

Well, I've got next to no money, so I'm taking the 1998 Blaupunkt Las Vegas out of my old car. If I were buying a new one, I'd be looking at the Los Angeles and San Jose models from them, though if you want a perfect fit, Blau may not be the way to go. These are ISO and Euro DIN sized units, rather than the wide ISO that the Lancer expects...

anything will fit. the hard part is making it look good!!!!
iso mount so you use factory brackets, the only trick is the
trim ring. ended up using black hot glue stick for final resting.
