Alternative tweeter mounting in the Lancer

When installing the sound system in my 03 OZ I began trying to locate the ultimate location for the tweeters in my Kappa component set and after much thought and testing I believe I found it IMO. The fact that tweeters need to be within 12 inches of the woofer posed a challenge for the lancer. All of the installs I seen when looking around on the net used the pillars or the Kick panels. I thought of using the kick panels but I had the Qform kicks in a previous car and hated them, they used up too much of the floor and prevented me from using the dead pedal that I use on a daily basis on my long commute. The imaging in my car is great IMO and I am not compromising anything with where these are placed. Let me know what you think.

I am working on the finishing touches on the car and will have more pics later.

my only concern with that location would be my leg blocking the direct sound, kinda muffle it really, I'm thinking about moving mine to directly infront of the door-handle, on that curved surface, looks like it would provide very good imaging

Cool spot.. I never woulda thought of putting one here. Great idea. You could have also tried the shoulder part of the seat like they have them in arcades and the new infinity cars. =D!!!

If you get in the car and close the door, look at the placement. I was concerned of this at first, but they are actually facing towards the rear. I used the flush mounting cups which allowed me to aim them toward the dome light. IMO it would be hard to block them the way they are placed.

I also thought of mounting there. It would work well also, but I wanted to keep em closer and also you would have to be creative with the crossover placement to prevent the window from catching the wires. I did look and it would work fine you should just attach the wires to the front and possibly locate the crossovers in the blank area behind the tweeter. My crossovers are huge and it would not have worked for mine.

Nice location! It's all about time alignment; as long as everything hits the ear at the same time that the mid does, you should have great sound quality!

This is a HUGE misconception. I've been to many shops that think this way too. 10 years ago, cars sounded just as good as cars do today, and they didn't have time alignment processing.

Tweeter placement is more about how far away the tweeter and woofer are from your ear. As long as they are the same distance from your ear, all will be well. they do not need to be within 12 inches of each other, that is a guideline to make sure that unskilled installers don't screw things up TOO badly. In my sound quality competition car which has yet to be beaten and has REALLY pissed off a guy who has had "professionals" tune his car using time alignment and equalization, where I have absolutely no processing; my tweeters are mounted on my A pillars, and my imaging, staging and tonality are all excellent.

The key is #1 installation location and aiming, and #2 phase alignment, you would be absolutely stunned by how much of a difference it can make with the left tweeter and right woofer in reverse phase to the right tweeter and left woofer when the tweeter is mounted in the A pillar.

and on a side note, for the stock front speakers, the left and right are out of phase with each other.

not at all, if you sit in the car and look at it, your leg would have to be against the door. dont get me wrong if your legs are huge you may have an issue but it works fine for me.
