Sub in/thru rear shelf

I am toying with the idea of putting a 10" pioneer free to air sub that I have laying around in/thru the back shelf of my lancer right between the two rear speakers.

What do you guys reckon ? Gooad or bad idea !

Should I stick with buying some new subs and putting them in the trunk?

Help, Ideas, Rubbishing even laughter will all be well received.
Thanks

ON the rear shelf, or through it? Big difference.

If you cut through the rear shelf, essentially making it your baffle, then renforice it like a madman... you have the potential to end up with a decent sounding system, complete with trunk space.

On the other hand, if you're just gonna set it ON the rear shelf, you'd probably do better to send me the speaker, and a plane ticket, so I can keep the speaker, and come kick you in the ear... because that ear pain will be far less hurtful than the ****ty SQ that would pour from a raw driver sitting on the rear deck.

The biggest rule with running a sub IB is to make sure the backwave can't just whip around the cone and hit the frontwave... You need to seperate the sides of the speaker, the rear deck, with a bit of renforcement could handle this quite nicely, though you'd want to keep your seats up unless you were hauling something.

haha yeah i guessed that is what you meant. i thought about it too and hell why not. if done properly you could have the added bass of a sub and all the trunk room you had stock. try something different and enjoy!

free air subs are not notoriously known for good SQ, but i don't see any reason why this setup wouldn't provide some decent kick. just make sure it is good and reinforced like hank said.

Speaking from having competed in both Sound Q and SPL for about 5 years, you could probably accomplish almost anything you wanted to do. It just depends on how much money and effort/time you want to involve in your projects. Like it's been mentioned already you would have to reinforce it a lot and it probably wouldn't sound the greatest. Personally I have my 15 box in the trunk but built in such a way that the front is in that space between the seatback and the trunk with the port on th 40 split and the sub on the 60 split. That way I can fold down the passenger side if I want a little more bass inside the car. Now that I've bored everyone.
