Input wanted: sub placement

So I've had my two 6.5" JL w0's hooked up in the rear deck for a while now. With only the two subs and the two speakers, my sound quality is lacking...

I want to put 2 speakers back in the rear deck. The small JL's sound nice while inside the cabin, but I think they are too small to leave in the trunk.

I think I remember someone putting one in the dash, but I couldn't find the thread.

Any ideas where I should put these little subs? Door, dash, under the seat?

thanks in advance

Build a custom box and fit it to were the armrest fits in the back seat. I don't know if that is possible, but it might be worth a shot.

I dont recall those being free-air subs. Correct me if i'm wrong. I do recall hearing them in a '94 forest green supercharged NSX that periodically runs at englishtown and lebanon,ny and they sound superb when done right. My cousin actually did the setup in that car. Used old newspaper and water to get a mold for a box he built into the passenger footwell where the factory stuff used to be. I'm shocked at how well these two 6.5s played. I think they need to be installed correctly to play correctly. As long as they are enclosed, you should be happy with their performance. Good Luck

The 6W0 is better in enclosures and you probably can't push them hard without over excursion. They should probably have a subsonic filter to block some of the lower frequencies since there is no enclosure to accomplish this. A pair will move about as much air as a 9" woofer. They are extremely deep for 6.5" speakers and will not fit or work well in the door. You would need a very solid baffle and an extreme amount of damping to combat rattling. I would try to make enclosures for them in the rear deck where they are. They fire into the cabin and output should increase.

So.. put the speakers in the door and build an in-deck box for the subs? sounds like a project to me.

I guess the good thing is that because they are small subs, the enclosure/enclosures will be small also. Dear I call them cute.

No door! Not worth the trouble. A box hanging from the deck would be much easier and perform better.

Here is an easy way to make a mold. Mask off the area to avoid a mess. Go to a hobby store and buy Rigid Wrap. It is used to make mountains, tunnels and stuff for model train sets. Its cheese cloth with plaster of paris on one side. Get a lasagna tray, put some water in it and cut strips of the Rigid Wrap the appropriate size. Lay them down let them dry and your set. This is water soluable so cleanup is easy, no fibergalss smell in the car either. an NSX has tons of room up front for that though, it won't work as well in most other cars without some cutting.

Half of my problem is I don't have enough speakers... I want 4 speakers and two subs. Right now the sound equilibrium in the car is way out of whack.

I will begin working on the sub enclosure project this weekend.. I'll keep you guys posted in a new thread...

but where can I put the other two speakers?

I understand your method but you didnt understand that what i said was somewhat of a joke. He said, "hey, i'm about to make a subbox for this car from a newspaper and a bottle of Poland Spring." Everyone looked around like WTF, hes joking right. Yeah right. It was comedy I tell you. Took the mold to work and came back with an enclosure for 2 6w0s. He actually used to teach at Ritop outside Boston. Definately a skilled man. I'll see if he has any digital pics and post them.

Don't want to hijack my man's thread by any means, but to answer your question...nope...still not finished. It has only been in Cincy waiting for paint for 8 months or so now. Long story short - my painter has been preoccupied. And yes it does suck a lot!!! Someday...someday. Thanks for the compliment btw.

Sorry for goin' OT travelsize...I hope that old thread helped ya out though.
