Tuning my system.. A few questions

I just bought a rockford fosgate 301m amp, and a rockford 12'' Dual voice coil sub. I'm running this on a clarion dxz735mp HU from the rear/sub rca's, a line level output. I have everything wired correctly, and it's all working, the sub just sounds much quieter than I'd expect.

My question is this: I can make it sound like I'd expect by tweaking the gain on the amp. What is the best way to fine tune this short of having an oscilliscope? Should I just tune it by ear or is there a procedure to follow?

The deck has a low pass filter built in, which I currently have set to 120. it goes to 50 or 80 too. Which should I choose?

Finally, is there anything else I should be doing to get this setup sounding the best it can?

Thanks!

PS: I currently have the sub's dual voice coil wired from the amp, to the positive, to the other positive, and from the amp to the negative, to the other negative. This should leave me at a 2ohm resistance level. Is this the best way to wire it?

PPS: The amp does 150wx1 or should do 300w when wired correctly (RMS of course)

Regarding the setup, I can't give you any advise. Regarding tuning, I know some people use tuning songs. I know Bass Mekanik makes some. You might want to do that. I don't know how to make a good use of those track though!

with tuning:

put your volume at 3/4. make sure all EQ, bass boost, etc is off. now adjust the gain slowly until you hear distortion (make sure to test this by sitting in your seat). once you hear distortion, back it off slowly until the distortion goes away. now start to make your EQ settings, and adjust the gain again accordingly.

pretty much, you aren't going to get a sub to sound louder than what it can do. don't use the gain like a volume knob, if it isn't loud enough than you need to get a more powerful amp and a sub that can push more. enclosure makes a big difference too, as do a lot of other factors.
