Anyone have any problems with sub grills?

I have a 10" Kicker and I want to get the Kicker grill for it. I've seen someone on here who has/had one, but I forget who. My last sub got a puncture in it from a toolbox sliding into it, so I'd like some protection for my new one. The guy at Circuit City told me that I shouldn't go with one, because the sub will hit it when it's thumping.

Now, I never have the bass cranked up, I only use it at low levels. I'm not trying to have a hard hitting system, just a little bass to fill in the lows and to have a more complete sound.

Thoughts????

i had speaker grils on my 12 in jl audios. only reason is i used to throw a shotgun in the back or some jumper cables and didnt want it to fu(k up the subs. u buy the grils that are meant for the subs and you will be fine. besides theres always warranty...

as long as ur not buying a random speaker girl that go on a ten inch sub you will be fine. buy the one designed for the sub. its a little more expensive sometimes but u get the guarantee that its made for the sub and will stick out the desired distance from the surround of the sub as to not interfere with the flexing

You can fairly easily measure the excursion of the sub by pushing on it and just compare that to the heigth of the grille...

^Better than pushing on it, is just getting the manufacturer's specs and using those... Like already stated, get ones designed for that sub.

^ Go to your hardware store and look for some metal cylinder spacer things. You can use it to back the grill off the face of the sub. It looks like a really small pipe and it will solve your problem of the grill hitting the sub.

I have a 10L7 and the kicker grill, Im also running a nine.1 amp to it which is rated 1200wrms. My sub has yet to hit the grill, there are no marks on the sub from it rubbing etc.

No complaints at all on the grill except its kinda ugly, but its thick metal and will really protect your sub, even from a heavy tool box.

Those are good too, but it protects mostly in the middle of the sub, at least on the 15" versions it does. The bottom and top are out in the open

That's the kind of grill I have. Does just fine keeping stuff away from the subs and doesn't come anywhere close to hitting them. Very strong, too.
