component speaker install
Hi All,
I've searched the archives but have some specific questions about installing aftermarket component speakers in my Evo VIII.
Is there a FAQ for installing front and rear speakers? I want to know the best way to remove the door panels and if I need to pull the rear seat to access the speakers on the rear deck.
The component speakers that I'll be installing are the 165cm Focals. Hope they fit and sound good.
Cheers,
Mike

I dunno if the Lancer and the Evo share the same door patern, but if they do... here is something that might help you.

No need to pull the seat for the rears. Remove the philips head screws holding the white clips to the grills(access in trunk), then just lift off the grill. 4 Philips screws and a wiring harness and speaker pulls out. Be careful with depth of your new speakers though, you might have to mount themn from underneath if you don't want to modify the grill.
Only thing tricky on the fronts is the little access door that covers the screw holding the door lock surround on. It is "hinged" at the front, and has a little clip at the rear, so pop it from the rear only, and it will stay attached. The cover at the bottom of the door pull justs pops off, but pull it straight up when you remove it, since there is a plastic molded centering pin on the bottom. The two covered screws have hinged covers as well, so just look closely and you'll see which side to pop to reveal the screw.
As far as fit, I doubt you'll be able to drop them right in, you'll likely have to make mounting plates, since factory spacing lines up with only a very few component sets 6.75 Dia. versus most component midranges 6.125 to 6.5 Dia. mounting circle.

You can use your factory speaker as your new speaker mount kit mount.
Cut off the plastic spiders that connects to the factory speaker magnet. Some 6 1/2 fit perfectly around that ring.
if you dont know what im talking about ill post a pix tommrow when i get home from work

I suppose that might work, I just prefer to leave the stock speakers intact. I won't own this car forever, and I always put the stock systems back in when I sell my cars. It is much easier to make a simple mounting plate than try to hack up the factory speakers IMO.
Focal component speaker MLS measurements
Just an update... I installed the rear speakers today. As expected, the diameter was slightly smaller than the stock units. Once I cut a cork gasket to the original speakers size, I bolted the new ones in using the stock holes and fender washers. Perfect fit and no buzz.
Btw, I highly recommend the Focal component speakers that I bought. They sound most excellent and for me, don't require the use of a subwoofer. Check out the link (when my server is up) - it shows just how accurate these component speakers measure.
Next weekend the fronts get replaced.
Cheers,
Mike
