My JDM Mitsubishi headunit install kit arrived today! Bye bye Metra
Well my Metra kit has finally pissed me off to the point of purchasing a new radio install kit, so why not OEM mitsubishi? Japan offers a very nice OEM double-din headunit install kit, which re-uses the factory radio brackets.
The JDM install kit is only the face-plate, but includes all the clips, and even new vents + hazard flasher switch. You need to remove the factory brackets off the stock radio, and install them onto the new double-din headunit. I will be doing the conversion later today hopefully (Depends on weather).
I would rate the Metra kit a 2 out of 10 probably. The fitment is horrible, the color is a little off, and the plastic has even warped a little bit due to the sun. The JDM piece feels much nicer!
Here is a pic. Sorry about the quality, used my cell phone.

Just finished installing everything:
Before with POS Metra kit:

After with JDM Mitsubishi kit:

Here is where you want to install the brackets on a double-din:

Here is a pic of the Pioneer BOLTED down inside the dash. No more free-floating on the Metra plastic bull****.

looks awesome man, i just dont like how it sits at more of an upward angle, sorry lol.....do you know if one is made for a single DIN with a pocket or something?
You can use this same kit for a single din, but you will need to find your own pocket. I've seen it done before though.

I paid around $220 for this item. A little pricey, but I really needed it.
Everytime I hit a bump with the Metra kit the headunit would shift and it made the car sound like it was old and beat.

I like the JDM kit but I can't justify spending $220 and there's no way in hell I'd buy the one from Mitsu. Does anyone know any time frame that another company is going to come out with a kit that doesn't cost more than $100?
The Metra kit sucks from what I hear and I haven't heard anything in a while from Scosche.

I see. The other one I was talking about is the GTS w/ Navi kit, I think that's the one on mitsubishiparts.net. Hopefully another company will come out with a better aftermarket kit, the quality on the Metra just doesn't seem that great from the pics.
The nav install kit has too wide of an opening for aftermarket headunits. The gap loooks horrible.
I bought the one from mitsubishiparts and there was a huge gap, but the shop that installed it just cut a "frame" out a plastic sheet to cover it and it looks pretty sweet. And yes I paid about $350 for it, but that was several months before the Metra kit came out and I couldn't wait. I had a brand new Avic-D3 just sitting there waiting to be used. I love the quality of the part so I have no regrets at all. I have always believed you get what you pay for, and after seeing pics of the Metra kit I am very happy I paid a little more for my kit.
