Questions about hooking up a sound system

I bought a 2010 Lancer GTS with the sun and sound package. Even though it came with the Rockford Fosgate sound system and 6 CD indash changer I was wanting to know if I am able to still hook up an amp or some subwoofers to it? I would like to keep the original car radio with it and just add the subs. If their is any good advice please let me know.

do you want to ALSO get rid of the RF sub? or do you want to keep the RF sub and then add more?

I have thought about keeping it but honestly the subs that I want to put in there will out do that sub. So I don't think there will be a point in keeping it. But still not sure. Keeping my options open.

I know we have a small amp under our seats powering everything, i left that in for my door speakers and i just got rid of the original stock sub and put in two alpine 10's with a 1400W amp. I just ran the power wire through the wheel well into the car by the break pedal and ran it all through the car to the trunk under the plastic panels, they just pop off. Then I hooked up the fuse to the cigarette lighter fuse so it turns on and off with the cars ACC, and ran that with the power chord, then ran the speaker wire on the passanger side under the panels to a volume knob I have taped to the side of my main counsle. The only reason for this is cause I have the Navi and didnt want to mess with it. I took off the door panels on both rear doors and found the wires for the speakers and followed them into the car, then spliced into them and hooked them up to a in-line out converter or whatever, just takes left+- and right+- and turns them into RCA's. then just hooked the RCA's to my volume knob, and then set my system to full and i adjust the bass by the volume knob.
might not be the best way to do it, but it works for me, sounds great, I can control the volume with having to make my way through the navi screen, and its a quick turn down if the cops pull me over.
For those installing subs on any 4 door models know that there is a rattle that comes from the plastic right behing the rear seats, i just bought some foam used to insulate an airconditioner and squeezed it in there. Hope it helps, and if it doesnt, i dont really care. anyone else want to add in?

The power hook up is fine but I found out a different way to hookup the subs and the bass is deeper and cleaner. I have 2, 12'' Image Dynamics that rocks and it hits very low. To tell you the truth I was surprise about how it sounded and it just rattles my brain. Instead of hooking the subs up to the door speakers hook them up to the sub. The wire diagram goes: Green= L+, Yellow= L-, Blue=R+, Red= R-. Hook those wires to the LOC and you are in business.

You mean the sub wire that are in the trunk? yeah, i did that too. And it started a small fire in my trunk. good luck with that buddy. The reason it sounds so good is cause not only is there sound going through those wire but there is also power going through those wires. maybe we have different LOC's but mine was good for about half a song then it started to smoke and burn what was around it.

Well mine happened right away, so you might be safe, could have been the guage wire I was using. Who knows, but just keep it in mind, if your ever driving round throwing your subs up and you start to smell burning wire or see smoke in the rear view turn your system off right away and make sure theres no damage. It is pretty loud with that set-up though, lol, rediculously loud.

It is ****ing crazy loud, and it is clear. Today I was out for awhile and I got out and was feeling around on the LOC and amp and nothing was hot. It was all cool to the touch and felt fine. Now you have me worried but thats good cause I didn't know that happened before so I will keep my eye on it. Thanks for the heads up.

No prob man, maybe mine was just a freak case, I was pushing a 4000 watt amp through it too, maybe there was some back power or something strange. But yeah if your bumping it pretty loud and nothing happened i wouldnt worry about it.

My amp is 300 but I connected it after the factory amp. Right where I disconnect the RF sub I cut the wires and connected everything there. Just seems weird that it didn't work for you. Cause a system that has 4000 watt amp seems like it will peel the paint off the car. If you ever do connect them back let me know I'm curious to know how loud and if it works for you.

Hey mex, what brand loc did you use, maybe mine was a cheap loc, cause at closer inspection my loc wires have a really small gauge, maybe thats what caused it.

I am not sure what wires you tapped into, but your locs shouldn't be catching fire, I have both mine tapped behind the HU in the dash, and they work like a dream... You have to be careful while tapping though because sometimes the taps don't tap the wires thoroughly.. in fact I actually had to do semi-mid wire splice... (ran the stripper up and down the middle of the wire, and soldered the loc wire to the exposed wire, and sealed the gap.. never had a fire with the locs... I can tell you though that tapping into the door wires you're messing with the power locks.. and you might be tapping into a 12v constant. careful

Look man, I taped into the rear speaker wires, I followed them from the speakers themselves, and i hated to do it, you think i wouldnt have rather just taped to the back of the headunit. But I have a navigation that i didnt feel like messing with. When you put higher gauge wire with smaller gauge it's bound to cause problems. If you have power going through a wire there is always a possibility for burning. Could have been the way I had it wired, I was also pushing a lot of power through it. Im not just going to pry up my molding and start snipping wires till sound comes out. I got a little more sense then that.

haha you make me laugh. apparently you have no sense about anything, because there isnt "power" going through the wires that go to the RF sub, its more of a signal really. you probably had a short and thats why your LOC caught fire. when you are hooking up a LOC to speakers, it doesnt matter the wire gauge, there is so little amperage that it doesnt really matter. thats why LOCs usually come with 18-20 gauge wire, it doesnt need that much amperage, its just sending a signal. if you knew that "putting higher gauge wire with smaller gauge causes problems," then why did you do it in the first place? Nevaeh did it right, and tapped into the speaker wires coming off the back of the radio, which is what you should do too.
