Need help hooking up iPOD!

Ok, can someone tell me what this plug is on the back of the stock stereo of our cars? The smaller empty hole on the left side of the power/antenna hole?

reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to hard wire my iPOD to my car stereo I've heard of people doing it with other cars. I know I know there are AM/FM tuners for the iPODs but they suck!

reason why they suck:

1] Its radio quality only not MP3 or CD quality
2] The iPOD stops playing when it needs to search for a new station due to the fact that other stronger stations over lap onto other channels.
3] Static!!!! when in between mountains or driving in downtown the reception gets f*ed up!

so anyway I was wondering if some one can identify what the un-used plug next to the power/antenna plug is....even better is if someone can tell me how i can hard wire my iPOD onto the stock stereo system.

i've heard of people using 1/8" head phone plugs/wires and pluging it into the back of their car stereo, i've also heard of people using a bunch of RCA plugs? jacks? as you can see I'm not electronic savvy so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

i think it'd be really hard to do it with the stock stereo..there's only two modes, Radio and CD.

With aftermarket stereo's, it's much easier because almost all new models have an AUX (auxilary input) in the back. These are just the red and white RCA plugs u can get anywhere..so im guessing this is what u're hearing about.

that small hole you are referring to is for another type of radio antenna I think. What you would be more interested in is the 13 pin connector on the other side. That is the input for the factory 6 cd changer. I honestly dont know how it would work, but I am sure that it could be done. Kenwood sells an adaptor for their stereos that takes that same input on their stereos and turns it into an RCA in. I know that the adptor fits, I dont know if it works. I have never messed with it myself, but I am sure that somehow you could it to work like that.

boobab: Thanks i figured that too most people were reffering to hooking up their iPODs to their aftermarket stereos...i was just hoping there would be a way to hook up my stock stereo with the iPOD too.

nds34d: So whats this adaptor you speak of? I'd give it a shot just as long as that adaptor isn't too expensive.

if i get this 13pin adaptor then wouldn't be in order to activate the CD changer you press the CD button on the stock HU? By doing that wouldn't it allow the music from the iPOD which is hooked up to the 13pin adaptor to play?

damn...i just might need to buy a cheap HU or something.

Dude, just get the Itrip. It only costs $35 at the Apple store. It doesn't suck. I use it all the time and it works great. Just set the volume to the "optimum" and no hassels. NO WIRES!!

i have the iTrip...its actually the reason why i want to hard wire it. Alot of the stations here are already used or overlapped by other stations so when the iTrip recognizes that the radio is picking up a stronger land based radio station it stops the music and scans the stations to find another open channel and with most of the channels already used or overlapped here in Southern Cali you can imagine how long it takes to find an open channel and how many times the iTrip keeps shutting the music down. Plus we have alot of Mountains here in So. Cal. and it causes the iTrip to pick up alot of static.

Here is a link to the adapter on crutchfield's site. Like I said I have no idea if it will actually work, but I would venture to say that there is a good chance. I have also never used the factory CD changer, so I have no idea how it interfaces with the stereo. Maybe someone on here with the factory changer could chime in and let you know how that works out.

thanks man, I'm gonna give the local electronics stores around here a call and see if they have that CA-C1AUX or if they have something similar. If not then i'll be ordering online.

hehe duno if you guys would be interested but check this out...this guy made a retracable slot for the iPOD that plugs directly into his headunit and recharges at the same time hehehe. he used an old CD-ROM drive thats powered and the motor by pressing the face of the CD-ROM will come out and all you have to do is push it back in.

thats pretty nifty looks stock too. duno if i wanna go this far with my iPOD but seriously iPODs are the sheet! screw MP3 HU's i've got all 15,000+ songs in one little box that plugs right up to my HU and has amazing audio quality! hehehe now i just gotta find out how to plug this up.

Isn't the audio quality of an IPOD diminished when you run it through a CD Changer or AUX port? That's why I didn't get one!

well from my findings on the www.ipodlounge.com just about everyone has done this mod to their cars and they find it better quality rather than using the FM Transmitter.
