Anyone do a lean tune?

I have a 2003 OZ Lancer for my DD.... With gas prices so high, Im working on a lean tune to maximize mpg. Just looking to see if anyone else has done anything related to this with the lancer?

Lean can be a bad idea.

Im logging everytime I got out, and making small changes...... Im not out driving the crap out of it....
I not going crazy like 17 18 a/f.... Im cruzing at about 15 to 16 a/f

I took timing out, and watching knock counts.....I had a few spots with counts of 4 or 5 on the way to work, but I think i got that taken care of.

I'm running ~15.6:1 in closed loop currently using my Innovate LC-1 in place of the front O2. I ran 15.8:1 to 16:1 before by forcing open loop during cruise.

I had no issues, but this current setup might not yield the MPG increase I'm looking for. Last tank I got about 16.8 MPG ... but that was with about 10 WOT passes while tuning and 6 runs on an auto-x course. I'll see how it goes with this new tank.

So, yes it's possible, but maybe not as useful as we think.

It's definitely possible, just be careful not to lean out too much.

I remember reading a while back about someone with a lancer oz getting a SAFC and leaning it out a little just for a daily driver and claiming about 35 mpg or so. Made me want to do that just to save the money.

I know this thread is like a week or two old, but normal driving my AFR stays around 14.5:1 (not driving under boost) and I get 34-36 miles to the gallon driving from el paso, tx to oklahoma. Thats all freeway. I speed around town, but still get over 30.

I easily get 30mpg during the week. That's a mix of street and highway driving.

TouringBubble tuned my car, and that helped with maybe a mpg or two out of a tank of gas.

Even on all highway driving, I still get only like 26 mpg. I don't know why. I have a short ram intake, header/downpipe, high flow cat, muffler, lightweight crank pulley, even brand new plugs and wires. I noticed it after I got the full exhaust done. Could that cause a loss in mpgs?

I get around 30-31MPG with combined highway and city driving that includes rush hour traffic. I don't typically don't boost when driving unless I have to accelerate past a car to merge. I've gotten 34MPG or better when I go on trips on the highway. It all depends on your driving habits. Light acceleration from a stop is better than heavy acceleration. Also, playing the lights is a smart move. Anything that contributes to keeping an object (your car) in motion allows for better MPG.

I pretend that I don't have brakes and get 32-34 mpg in combined city/highway consistently. Saves on clutch wear too.
